Why is it important to practice with a tennis ball?
• hand-eye coordination ➡️ working with a smaller ball forces receiver to hone in on their hand-eye skills, watching the ball all the way in
• soft hands ➡️ a tennis ball is bouncy, working with a tennis ball prevents stabby/stiff hands and will force receiver to catch the ball in their fingers and catch it “like an egg”
• eyes behind the ball ➡️ working along side hand-eye coordination, the goal is to keep there eyes and body behind the ball to emphasize good body posture and stance when receiving
• timing ➡️ this is shown through the receivers footwork, staying light on their feet, when to react, and decision to drop step vs charge or stretch towards ball, and timing up which foot “to catch the ball on”
