🏛️ Faculty of Classics Wins University Outreach Award 🏛️

We are delighted to announce that the Faculty of Classics and the Museum of Classical Archaeology has been awarded the University Outreach Award at Classics for All’s 6th annual Impact Awards! 🏆

This prize celebrates our wide range of widening participation and outreach initiatives designed to ensure that the ancient world is accessible to everyone.

From running exciting summer schools in partnership with the Sutton Trust for over a decade, to collaborating with the Department of Archaeology on our 'Sciences of the Past Day' to show how science and the humanities connect, we work hard to expand access to classical studies.

We are incredibly grateful to all the schools, teachers, parents, and museum visitors whose wonderful feedback made this award possible. Looking ahead, we will continue our work to support the next generation of classical scholars from all backgrounds✨

Yale 🤝 Cambridge.

Back in March, our graduate students headed to New Haven to dive into all things "Antiquity and Environment." 🌿🌊 On the agenda: tuna migration patterns, Ovidian ecology, and a deep dive into the Beinecke Rare Books & Manuscript Library.

It wasn't just about the ancient world, though—we also spent time talking about the future. We held a joint workshop on navigating the international job market, sharing tips on how to move between the UK and US academic scenes. 🎓✈️

There’s something special about seeing two departments come together to tackle the big questions. Huge thanks to the for being such fantastic hosts! 🥂🏛️
🥳It’s the Museum’s Birthday! 🥳

Today in 1884 the Museum of Classical and General Archaeology opened on Little St Mary’s Lane (where it stayed until 1982), making this the Museum’s 142nd Birthday.

Many of our casts are, of course, in their birthday suits for the special day – swipe to see how else they’ve been celebrating. 🎉🎉

If you’d like to visit us in our birthday week, we’re open Tue-Fri 10am-5pm, and open on Saturdays from 2-5pm. Pop in and say hello!
The core of The Hunger Games is a direct evolution of the Athenian tribute to King Minos 🐂

In Plutarch's Life of Theseus, there is a mythological account of the Athenian youths (including Theseus) sent to the Labyrinth as a sacrifice to the Minotaur—a spectacle of state power designed to punish a rebellious population

Another ancient text that has similar themes is Sophocles' Antigone, where we see a young woman standing up to a tyrannical regime.

The actual thing we look for might surprise you...

For clarity, we aren't saying that you shouldn't read the Odyssey or that reading any work from the ancient world is a waste of time- it's absolutely not! We would encourage everyone to read more widely, both inside and outside of Classics. It's just that it is not the *most* important thing for our applicants!

We are primarily looking for interest in the subject and academic potential 🎓

You shouldn't feel put off from applying if you haven't had the chance to read the Odyssey (yet) or if you'd prefer to spend your time with, for example, Roman plays or looking at pot sherds- those things are also really valuable 🏺

If you're spending time with ancient material, whatever that might be, and thinking deeply about it then that is what we're really looking for NOT whether you've read the biggest, most famous book on the shelf 📖

Anyone want to hazard a guess about the object from shown in the video? 🤔
Last week we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming students from around the country to our first joint outreach event: Science of the Past 🔬✨

Tired of the narrative that science and the humanities are rival disciplines we wanted to give students a real look at how science is really used in the disciplines of Classics and Archaeology 🏺

From how ancient Greeks and Romans approached scientific and technological problems to the scientific methods we can use to find out more about objects and people from the past, we had a fascinating day giving students a taster of Cambridge study 🎓

Thank you to all our partners for helping to make it such a great event

Except our job often is reading….Spending some time in the Faculty library 🎉📚📖 #universitylibrary
