Man lebt und konsumiert im Alltag schlicht so weiter, als gäbe es die Krise nicht, um schmerzhafte Gefühle wie Existenzangst, Ohnmacht oder tiefe Schuldgefühle gar nicht erst an sich heranzulassen.Dieser Zustand erzeugt jedoch eine permanente, oft unbewusste Reibung, die in der Psychologie als kognitive Dissonanz bezeichnet wird. Sie entsteht aus dem quälenden Widerspruch zwischen dem eigenen ökologischen Wissen („Mein Verhalten schadet dem Planeten“) und dem tatsächlichen, umweltschädlichen Handeln („Ich fliege dennoch in den Urlaub“). Da echte Verhaltensänderungen oft unbequem sind und spürbaren Verzicht erfordern, wählt das Gehirn instinktiv den Weg des geringsten Widerstands: Es verändert nicht das Verhalten, sondern die Bewertung der Situation. Durch kollektive Rationalisierungen und Rechtfertigungsmuster – wie dem Verweis darauf, dass der eigene Beitrag ohnehin zu gering sei oder dass zuerst die Politik oder andere Staaten handeln müssten – wird das moralische Unbehagen erfolgreich betäubt und das eigene Gewissen entlastet.
Verstärkt wird dieses Phänomen durch die Barriere der psychologischen Distanzierung. Um die unsichtbare Bedrohung handhabbar zu machen, schiebt die Psyche sie unbewusst von sich weg.
