Drake and I are about to celebrate our 13th anniversary, and his 15th birthday on June 21 (which is actually his gotcha day but because he’s a rescue I’ll never know when his actual birthday is). Anyway I wanted to share this just because.

He’s a sweet funny dude who only likes MAYBE 10 people sometimes. But I love him all the time. Even with his crusty eyes.

I have nothing witty to say here, but summer has finally arrived āš”ļø

Actually I have something very serious to say… I posted in stories about everything fitting in a program that works for you… Pilates, yoga, lifting, resting, saunas, recovery, protein (but god help me don’t add the word maxxing), HRT, peptides (yes ozempic is a peptide!) and then I took it down because I said something platitudey thing about also having to listening to your body.

Maybe the second part of listening to your body is also realizing your body is more like a combination lock…. And you may have try to a couple of number combos before you find your unlock. I think we’re all looking for panaceas…. The one protein dessert that will change everything or the one app or the one class… and really what that one thing might be is actually the catalyst for a collection of things that make you feel your best. I think as an instructor of 27 years and counting I get super judgey … but just like no one can see the inside of another person’s relationship (another one of my fav adages) no one can feel what’s happening in your body. So go for it…. Try it all. Try nothing. But it’s summer so hallelujah šŸ™ŒšŸ½

Also this video is actually from October 2025 but it took 6 months to post it šŸ˜‚ some content creator I’ve become.

A meandering post and some random photos from one week of 46. No audio on the last slide because ASMR.

I haven’t written on the grid in a minute, but almost a week ago I turned 46 and even as a Taurus who loves month-long celebrations and luxury goods, I wanted to do it quietly.

I wanted to do what I’ve done for nearly 27 years of teaching, teach a class and eat Chinese food.

And that’s exactly what I did.

Recently, I also did a talk with my work colleague and dear friend, where we spoke to current study abroad students about our own study abroad experiences more than 20 years ago and how they shaped where we are now as Americans living abroad.

What came up for me was curiosity and risk-taking, and how that experience has informed the last 26 years since.

My life has been a series of both calculated and uncalculated risks. I came to Florence with no plan of ever living here. Actually, no plan at all, except to bide my time until I found another job (I would find many jobs even an Italian one!). And yet, somehow, it has become one of the most deeply fulfilling experiences of my life.

There are, of course, the annoying things. The Questura. The stamps on the receipts. The receipts that live in your passport while you wait for the things that make you official. The language and cultural barriers. But what all of that has actually proven is that we are forever students of our own existence.

If I’ve learned anything in the last 46 years, it’s that life is never quite the way you imagine it. It’s often better, if you let it. If you take the risk. If you let curiosity lead and allow expectation and comparison to take a back seat or no seat all.

Over the last few months, I’ve had a lot of challenges. Some of you may know, but I had a lumpectomy in February, NOT cancer, and in December had to deal with some other personal challenges that included an impromptu trip to Jamaica. Not to sit on a beach drinking cocktails or even mocktails, but to care for someone.

We’re halfway through January, and it has either felt like a decade or a second. The holiday hangover—whether literal or metaphorical—is (hopefully) starting to lift, and routines begin to peek back in. That strange liminal space between Christmas and New Year’s—the one the internet has memed into oblivion—finally loosens its grip. You know the one: a wrinkle in the space-time continuum where you don’t know what day it is and can’t remember the last time a vegetable crossed your path because you’ve been on a steady cheese diet for seven days.

For some people, the new year is about resolutions or goal-setting. A clean slate. A fresh start. Or—god forbid—a juice cleanse.

Here’s a small confession: I don’t do any of this.

Because the truth is, we can begin again whenever we want. January 1st doesn’t have a monopoly on renewal. We can begin again on July 23rd. Or a random Tuesday. Or in the middle of a moment when something quietly clicks—or doesn’t.

We can decide that something is done—whether it’s a job, a relationship, a habit, or even a thought that’s been looping endlessly in our minds. And then, just as simply, we can begin again. Because everything ends—even your 225th push-up in the middle of my class.

The end of the year threw me for a loop in a way I hadn’t experienced before. I unexpectedly spent Christmas in New York, eating Doritos alone, instead of sitting around a table in Italy, passing bowls of tortellini in brodo with friends from both my Italian and New York worlds. A series of personal events felt like a full-on nervous-system wrecking ball.

I don’t know why we’re doing this, but 2016… what a time to be alive. So many tears (not pictured but we weren’t really recording ourselves crying yet). We were so sad for so many reasons. I was so sad for so many reasons. And so many handstands. And Drake used to be so sweet. 2026… fewer tears (so far!), lowkey still sad and also mad for similar reasons, but also more handstands. Drake meaner than ever. šŸ˜‚šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø
Today I tallied it up. I’ve spent a year in Florence over the past three years—wild. Back in 2001, my semester abroad in Aix was all cheap wine, Irish pubs, and teaching aerobics in French (mon dieu!). I left with better language skills, but mostly a hangover.

Now at 45, still teaching, but not drinking and instead of chasing boys, I’m chasing (or dragging) my small dog around piazzas in sportswear. And honestly? I’ve never enjoyed this city, its people, and its vibe more.

If you’re thinking of taking a leap—do it. Experiences > stuff. And yes, bring the dog. 🐾
