In the first twenty minutes I already know the photos aren’t coming yet. I’m not stressed about it. I’m just waiting. Giving you things to do, watching the stiffness slowly run out of places to hide.
There’s no rushing it. The camera can smell impatience.
So I keep moving. Keep the session rolling even when nothing is landing yet. Because the only way through the performance is through it.
And then something changes.
You stop treating the shoot like a shoot. You start messing around, laughing at something silly, forgetting for a second that any of this is supposed to look good.
That’s when I know we’re there.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe. As adults we spend most of our lives armored. Edited. Managing how we come across. But trust does something to that armor. When you feel completely safe with someone the need to manage your image around them quietly disappears.
And what’s underneath isn’t just the real you. It’s the version of you that existed before the armor was necessary. Before you learned to be careful.
That’s what I’m waiting for in every session. Not the polished moment. The moment the armor comes off and the child in you comes out to play with the child in them. Poking. Teasing. Laughing at nothing.
That only happens in the presence of complete safety. And complete safety only comes from complete trust.
I’m not here to make you look good together. I’m here to create enough trust in the space between us so that part of you feels safe enough to show up.
Those are the moments I live to capture.
