This question was a central starting point for our proposal for the SCHAFFEREI on the former Kodak site. Located between Hedelfinger Straße, Wangen, Hedelfingen, the Neckar and the Wangener Höhe, the site was previously highly sealed and allowed for little air movement.
Together with, we developed an urban and landscape design concept that responds with a clear east-west layout. Generous, biodiverse climate corridors divide the building mass into six flexible development strips, bring air and greenery deep into the quarter, and support cooling wind flows.
The former Kodak buildings are retained and become the identifying centre of the new quarter. Around them, a diverse productive district emerges with workplaces, housing, leisure uses, a neighbourhood square, the Hangpark and public open spaces.
Our proposal was selected in the first competition round and further developed as one of two teams in the revision phase for. In the end, the commission was awarded to – congratulations to the team!
We are pleased to have contributed to the discussion around existing structures, conversion, productive city and climate-oriented neighbourhood development in Stuttgart-Wangen.

— The Kiosk, Dhermi
by CITYFÖRSTER
How can a small structure help shape the future of a rapidly changing city?
Selected as a finalist in the HOLD IT category, The Kiosk, Dhermi reimagines everyday urban infrastructure through adaptability, simplicity and climate-responsive design. Developed for the growing coastal town of Dhermi, Albania, the project provides a flexible platform for local vendors while responding to the challenges of seasonal tourism and changing public space needs.
Its defining feature is a transformable canopy roof that opens during the day to provide shade and closes at night to create secure storage. Modular, affordable and easy to assemble, the kiosk demonstrates how thoughtful design can create lasting value through even the smallest architectural interventions.
The HOLD IT category celebrates objects, installations and spatial interventions that redefine our relationship with public space, materiality and everyday life.

We are proud to announce the completion of Phase 1 of the Visitor Centre at Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of immense cultural significance. Together with local architect, and funded by our team designed the masterplan for the 722-hectare historic site, including the rehabilitation and development of visitor facilities across the wider landscape.
Great Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most important archaeological and spiritual landmarks - the birthplace of an ancient civilization and the source of the nation’s name.
Often referred to by historians and visitors alike as the “Machu Picchu of Africa,” Great Zimbabwe stands as one of the continent’s most extraordinary and enduring cultural treasures.
Conceived as a quiet and breathable piece of architecture, the new Visitor Centre amplifies the monumental atmosphere of the site while remaining deeply respectful of its heritage landscape.
Earthy materials - rammed earth walls, polished concrete floors, teak detailing, and corten steel signage - create tactile continuity with the ancient ruins, while slender steel columns and a floating roof plane open the interiors to light, wind, and landscape. Passive design strategies, including cross ventilation, deep overhangs, shaded courtyards, a planted green roof, rainwater harvesting, and solar canopies, significantly reduce energy demand and water consumption. Shallow foundations and careful siting safeguard sensitive archaeology.
Crafted with local labour and low embodied carbon techniques, the building honours the cultural and spiritual significance of this extraordinary area, offering a sustainable, reverent setting that deepens visitor understanding while preserving a heritage landscape of profound historical importance.
Designed for generations to come, the project stands as a bridge between the past and the future of Great Zimbabwe.

Tower of Babel is a monthly series on the Architectenweb Podcast. In it, architect Daan Roggeveen (MORE Architecture) talks to designers, developers and other experts, each of whom has their own perspective on high-rise buildings. The aim is to find the answer to the question: how do you actually create a truly good high-rise building?
This month’s guest is architect Martin Sobota, architect and founding partner at Cityförster.
The conversation stems from the research conducted by Cityförster, in collaboration with PosadMaxwan and the City of Rotterdam, into Carbon Based Urbanism. In this research, the researchers shift the focus on the sustainability of the built environment from the building level to a broader perspective: urban planning and how it influences residents’ lifestyles.
Martin explains the rationale behind the research. He outlines the research methodology and discusses which urban system is the most sustainable, and how this can be measured. He also explains how a more densely developed part of a city has a lower carbon footprint in terms of usage than a suburban district.
Martin also talks about his background and the launch of his transnational practice, Cityförster. He discusses the practice’s international focus and his long-standing connection with the city of Tirana. Martin discusses the high-rise projects he is working on in that city, and the dynamics involved in defining the programme. He also explains how flexibility and the shaping of collectivity play a major role in the high-rise projects there.
So do have a listen! The podcast will be available online from tomorrow morning on the podcast section of the architectenweb website (and on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all other platforms!)

We visited the construction site to see the current progress of our project:
renovation and vertical extension of a 1960s housing estate for.
1 New balcony elements:
New balcony elements extend the existing buildings and create additional quality in the outdoor space.
2 Existing meets future:
The buildings are renovated step by step and simultaneously extended, improving both energy performance and spatial quality.
3 Between construction site and trees:
The green character of the neighbourhood is preserved.
4 Building while occupied:
A major challenge and key to maintaining social continuity in the neighbourhood.
5 Inside the extension:
New apartments with a distinct atmosphere and high living quality.
6 Old meets new:
The joint between existing structure and extension becomes a defining spatial element.
7 View into the greenery:
The mature trees remain a central asset of the project.
Renovation + densification = a new way of working with the existing city!

The Masterplan transforms a 244-hectare brownfield site in the heart of the city into one of Europe’s most ambitious urban regeneration projects. Developed in collaboration with,,, and, the proposal was awarded First Prize in an intense international competition.
The plan introduces over 10,000 new homes alongside commercial, civic, and recreational spaces, structured around the principles of the 15-minute city. At its core, the existing railway landscape is transformed into the defining spatial framework that supports a spine of green and blue corridors, active mobility, long-distance views, and a network of public spaces.
Six distinct neighbourhoods are organized around a central mobility hub and new train station, creating a flexible, connected urban structure that accommodates diverse lifestyles, and future adaptability. A strong public space system — including a railway park, forest park, and sports park — is linked by a continuous north–south green axis.
The plan will convert the long-neglected railway area on the Pest side, over the next 15 years, into a European benchmark of sustainability- lively, mixed-used and landscape-driven.
