Casa Santa Maria del Oro
Mexican have created this subterranean yet light-filled home in Nayarit, partially burying it into a steep hillside overlooking a lake and covering it in a green roof.
The native trees that dot the hillside were kept in place and the home was shaped around them, while creating concrete light wells that evoke cenotes.
To reach the space, guests descend down a stunning pathway made from cylindrical pillars, which is also designed to move rainwater away from the house and back towards nature, while the concrete flooring has a tint created by volcanic ash.

Concrete in different colours, smoothly plastered surfaces and natural stone walls characterise the home’s interiors, complemented by elements of oak and fur that add warmth to the space. The architects cut a double-story circular opening into the existing dividing wall of the structure, transforming the formerly separated parts of the building into a unified whole.
In addition, the existing structural system is overlaid by a concrete structure cast in situ, which creates a variety of situationally-shaped spaces, including two atriums that bring light to the garden level. New roof windows fill the building with a natural brightness, while openings in various shapes in the concrete panes lead the light further inside the different areas of the house ‘the concrete structure appears like a colossal table with its striking supports and beams,’ says buchner bründler architekten.
