When we plant a garden, or even a seed, we plant endless possibilities. There is not one definite outcome. There is not one perfect end point.
But for many of us when we make a plan or set a goal we have one definite view of what success looks like. So anything other than that is a sign of failure.
As we enter into summer season especially weāre called to examine all that weāve achieved so far. There is ripeness and fullness around us and many seeds that were planted in the depth of winter have reached their culmination.
The challenge with this time is we look back and wonder what could have been.
The gift is to appreciate what we have cultivated even in all its āimperfectionā.

I mean Iām still recovering to be honest and my journal is still a dark place from time to time but there was a real season of sadness and grief when I let go of my identity as a student.
Finally having no where to go. No steps to climb. No goals left to achieve. Youāve reached the top and you look around. But the view isnāt as good as you hoped it might be.
Thereās this athlete who achieved like every achievement in their sports career and when he was asked about it he said something along the lines of āI wish someone told me that when you reach the top thereās nothing thereā. That hurts to think about even now.
The recovery is tough.
Even through all this difficulty I still recognise the achievement of what I accomplished in this degree. And Iām so grateful for having made it to this point.

From talking to other recent graduates I think thereās a strong urgency felt by most people to have their next job lined up after a PhD. Thereās a huge expectation to go into a post doc and enter the professor pipeline or land a high paying industry job.
Thereās an expectation that if you donāt do this, the PhD was for nothing. And thatās not true. A PhD is forever. And itās a self contained unit. If you choose to do notion further in academia or your chosen area of study thatās cool. But either way you donāt have to decide right now.

When I first decided to do a PhD in machine learning it was because I really wanted to work as a machine learning researcher, specifically in recommender systems, more specifically at google or similar.
I really wanted to be a google girlie. But the jobs I was interested in required a lot more experience than I had and I didnāt feel like I had the technical skills to go into an industry job (though in hindsight I was just insecure).
So I was going to do a PhD and then do the ai residency at google, which Iām not even sure exists any more.
Over time my aspirations have changed, and an industry job doesnāt appeal to me anymore, certainly not in a full time capacity.
I donāt dream of labour, and I definitely donāt want to be a small cog in a big wheel at this time in my life.
Iām open to things changing in the future but not now.
Thanks for your time x
To name a few:
1. Loss of identity - many of us have been STUDENTS for nearly our whole lives, now what are we
2. It can be hard saying goodbye to a way of life, to people youāve worked with, to research.
3. Itās a time of huge uncertainty as you may not know what path your future holds.
4. It can be anticlimactic ā especially when those examining you donāt see much novelty in the experience.
5. It can be lonely, especially when you feel like you āshouldā be happy.
I hope you know that youāre not alone. I felt very alone going through this and I wish it was something I had known about before experiencing it or saw other people talking about it.
Did you experience post PhD depression?
All jokes aside I love doing a PhD and Iāve gained so many wonderful things since starting.
āļø learning to present my research findings
āļø learning to take a research project from idea to execution
āļø learning to tackle difficult publication targets
āļø learning to persevere when things get challenging
āļø how to collaborate with other researchers
To name a few that were top of mind.
9/10 these videos are just because I canāt resist the audio.
What are some of the things youāve gained from your PhD programme - positive or negative?

Itās normal to take a bit of a hit to your confidence after starting a PhD. You are pushing yourself to the extent of human knowledge and trying to learn or figure out things that no one has ever done before. Itās hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it.
Does that make it right? No probably not.
I think there is a big problem with the āfake it til you make itā mindset because everyone around us can seem so cool calm and collected that feelings of self doubt and imposter syndrome can be really isolating in grad school.
Letās normalise not knowing everything. Of course we donāt know everything in our fields. If we did thereād be a whole lot less funding for PhD students!

I have been using Notion for all my planning for about a year now.
It has a main dashboard for giving an overview for the day/week/month.
There is a thesis section for tracking papers, project notes, research diary, meeting notes, publication plan etc.
There is also a section for tracking progress towards the transferable skills that we can develop during a PhD programme.
There is a massive section for tracking projects and actions for all of your PhD and personal projects using the āgetting things doneā methodology.
There is a reflection and goal setting with newly added 12 week goal setting and tracking templates.
Iāve been getting great use out of this Notion template as a PhD student and hope yāall enjoy!!
