Framed up and ready for London Original Print Fair! This edition is the first in my Wallpaper Women series, a contemporary response to the themes of the gothic novel, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’.
I first studied the book at school many many years ago and it is one which has stuck with me since. Written from a first person point of view, the story follows a woman who was placed into isolation and has a breakdown of her mental health, which we witness through her fixation and the manifestation of the wallpaper around her.
As the first edition in this series, I turned to an existing monotype I made of myself and projected imagery of flowers onto it (you may recognise these floral monotypes in my previous post!). Abstracting the figure with these patterns, and through the addition of chine collé, the final edition becomes the wallpaper and responds to the themes of female autonomy, reclamation and empowerment.
The title “Wallflower” is also a personal reclamation of the term, reflecting my relationship to visibility, identity, and quietness. As a piece that started as a self-portrait, the work explores how the figure can dissolve into pattern, becoming both subject and surface for reflection.

As a part of a recent body of work, I’m making an on-going series of flower monotypes; a subject that deviates away from the figures that usually populate my work.
Historically, flowers were deemed a socially acceptable and polite subject for women to paint. Out of rebellion, it was one of the reasons why I was never drawn to depict them.
Wanting to reclaim flowers for myself, the monotypes I made, abstracted with expressive mark-making and ink bleeding, oppose the politeness and delicacy assigned to them.

A London-based contemporary artist and printmaker who rose to prominence as the winner of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2025, Chloe is notable for being the first printmaker to win the competition, primarily using a spontaneous and intuitive monoprinting process to create expressive figurative works.
Her practice is rooted in monoprinting, a process where a unique image is created by painting with etching ink on a surface (such as aluminium or copper plates) and then transferred to paper using an etching press.
Chloe’s work often explores identity, female empowerment, sexuality, and the human psyche. She frequently incorporates masks, costumes, and anthropomorphism to evoke mystery and storytelling.
Barnes holds an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking (2023) and a BA in Illustration (2019) from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol)
Our collaboration will start at Somerset House in May at the London Original Print Fair.
The following month, Chloe will feature in Misfits, a group show that opens on June 10.

This option came with a lot of risks. I would be using a press I never used before and couldn’t dial in to the right pressure, studio lighting would increase the drying time of my inks and I had the logistical issues of how to dampen my paper and dry it without it cockling. Not to mention the inherent unpredictability of the medium, the pressure and having less time to paint my portrait if I was to account for the time needed to print.
The process of monoprinting is less talked about and has historically been coined as an experimental medium, unlike painting, drawing and more conventional forms of printmaking.
Whilst I am aware that on the day of the finals, likeness of Brian was not fully achieved, I thought I was able to capture an essence of who he was and his theatrical presence on stage. I work in attempts and with emotion. I battled with control and I accept the unpredictability that comes along with the expression of my marks. I was on 4 hours sleep, grappled with the distractions of being filmed and attempted to paint from life before resorting to use a photo reference.
Even with all the risks involved, I made the decision to print my plate and bring light to my medium, and for this, I am incredible proud of myself.

I feel very lucky to be one of the six finalist shortlisted for the prize, an amazing opportunity which grants the winner £6,000 towards a studio for one year.

Posted • Gurr Johns is pleased to have partnered with the Artists' Collecting Society to host an exhibition of emerging artists works for the ACS Studio Prize awards.
Founded in 2017, the ACS Studio Prize offers recent graduates the chance to win £6,000 to contribute to the cost of an artist’s studio in a UK city of their choice. The Studio Prize was established after a number of our members’ spoke of the economic challenges they faced when starting their artistic careers. ACS realises how difficult it is for emerging artists to focus on their practice especially after leaving university. The ACS Studio Prize was founded to help.
The judges are Simon Martin, Director of Pallant House Gallery, Mat Collishaw and Viscountess Bridgeman CBE, ACS' Managing Director.
The exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday 19 - Thursday 21 September and the works are for sale. Artists will receive 100% of the sale price of their works.
