🎙️ Today, we share a conversation with Derek Desormeaux, president of AIGA Chicago, who moved to Chicago from a small town in Northern Michigan after studying graphic design at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids.
Derek speaks with host Christian Solorzano about his path from wanting to be a comic book artist to leading one of the city’s largest design organizations. He shares the moment the previous president offered him the role — and why he said yes despite his first instinct being to turn it down.

The conversation explores what leadership looks like when you’re the one checking tickets at your own event, why Derek believes design deserves the same respect as any other form of labor, and what keeps him up at night about the sustainability of a creative career right now. He also talks about the AIGA Chicago Paper Show, his collection of books, and why he thinks designers should stop forming their opinions about the industry from social media.

Enjoy the conversation, and if you enjoy this show, please rate it, share it with your friends, and subscribe wherever you listen. —

🎙️ Today, we share a conversation with Sarah Adler, a multidisciplinary designer and artist originally from Sanibel Island, Florida, who moved to Chicago in 2016 to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Sarah speaks with host Christian Solorzano about her origin story — from building websites in fourth grade to leaving Florida at seventeen to pursue design in Chicago. In this episode, Sarah opens up about her hand-crafted, tactile approach to making and how working across mediums — logo design, print, web, object design, and painting — shapes the way she thinks about creativity and process.

The conversation explores her work with Gab Magazine, an independent Chicago publication now on its third issue, and what draws her to print in an increasingly digital world. Sarah shares how intuition drives her creative decisions and what it means to build something real with the community around you.

Enjoy the conversation, and if you enjoy this show, please rate it, share it with your friends, and subscribe wherever you listen.
