In 2016, I bought my first pied-à-terre in Paris — a dream come true after a decade of visiting and living in this city.
At the time, I was still based in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I’d spent years remodelling properties and running a short-term rental alongside my other businesses.
When I found the right flat in Paris, I oversaw the entire renovation from abroad — navigating time zones, contractors, and the realities of working within a very different cultural system.
💸 The acquisition process? Surprisingly efficient.
⚒️ The renovation? Not so much.
Even years later, hidden issues kept surfacing — plumbing, electrics, water systems, structural surprises. What looked “fully equipped” on paper required far more intention, investment, and refinement to meet true hospitality standards.
One key lesson stayed with me:
Paris doesn’t operate like North America — and that difference is where the learning (and magic) lives.

✧ Work with it, not against it.
When I moved back in 2018, I turned everything I had learned — the friction, the beauty, the gaps — into what is now Chez Jöne.
