Ive been teaching yoga for over 11 years now. When I first started teaching meditation was something I had to “do”. And I did it happily, gladly.

In a check box way of wake up, journal, meditate, do yoga (oh how young and free I was!!! 😅🤣🤣) Tick. Tick. Tick.

Now I see meditation as something entirely different. Meditation is not something I have to “do” on my list of green-health-check-points but it’s just something that I need.

And I don’t even call it or think of it as meditation any more. It’s more like “just-sitting-the-fuck-down-closing-my-eyes-and-breathing-for-3-minutes”.

No scrolling. No listening to a podcast. No reading a book. No hanging the washing. No making beds. No cooking dinner. No lunch box. No managing child conflicts. It doesn’t have to have a certain background music playing, I don’t need to light a candle or burn incense or any of the other things I thought that marked it as “meditation”

But the simple act of just sitting (even when there is a mountain of other shit that needs to get done) and breathing even only for 3 minutes, for me, is absolutely essential.

It’s taken me 11 years and probably more aptly 2 children to really “get it”. And finally I do.

If you are feeling busy, overwhelmed, hamster wheelish, running on empty, post-Christmas-blues, happy, sad, cross, frustrated, hopeful, peaceful, angry or worked up. I can highly highly recommend my technique of “sitting-the-fuck-down-and-breathing”
Have had some really interesting DM convos around alcohol after sharing my post last week including from people who also found really helpful in reducing alcohol.

I ALWAYS feel the first “what would you like to drink?” Is the biggest stumbling block to maintaining an alcohol free period and having something where you can confidently and easily reply “oh I have some Trips to drink” for me, honestly made it so much easier - especially in bigger or new group settings. For me, once everyone has moved onto the second drink I never really felt the need to try play catch up. Unlike alcohol, I found that the Trip drinks never gave me a “chasing-more-of-this-feeling” like alcohol sometimes can and the absolute best part for me was waking up clear and fresh in the morning. (Which made it easier to stay on track with exercise, which made it motivating to eat well, which made my mood better, which made my relationship with my children more patient… just a general UPWARD spiral 👌🏻)

If you’re curious about reducing alcohol or just having a temporary break from it I can highly recommend Trip (I had drunk them exclusively for 5 months before they contacted me to be an affiliate 🤪🤣)

“Yes my boy. That’s right”

“Mommy. Mommy. If it is FOUR and FOUR. it is a draw”

“Mommy. If it’s EIGHT AND EIGHT - it is a draw.”

“Yes. And Parker tell me, if it is EIGHT and FOUR…. Then who is the winner?”

“KOLISI” 🤣

Alcohol 🍸 ✨

I’ve had a very interesting relationship with alcohol this year. For the first 6 months of the year, for a variety of reasons, I decided to give up alcohol entirely. Even though I had made the very clear decision, for the first 3 months I was amazed at how much the “thinking” around alcohol absolutely consumed me. Every new environment required me to re-solidify/think/confirm my decision. I put myself in as many alcohol-related environments that I could - I went totally sober to: a Scottish Burns night, a big family wedding, Bookclub, Braai’s, 40th birthday parties, date nights, family holidays, airports, music concerts, parenting without Warren, and university friends reunions. I learnt a LOT about myself and my relationship to alcohol in this time. It was only really at the 6 month mark, that I wasn’t thinking about having it/not having it ALL THE TIME.

Around the 6 month mark when I went on a retreat to Greece to celebrate my 40th with a beloved friend I decided, very consciously to have a glass of wine. I’m sharing a few things I wrote down over that time around what I learnt about drinking for myself… you can slide across to read.

I had written a way longer post on this but decided that it’s maybe for another time (or maybe never 🤣) and I’m sure there are probably a lot of strong/varied/complicated views on this (I still feel in two different camps about it!) 😵‍💫 but giving it up for that time definitely brought me a lot of understanding around it.

I’d be so curious to hear where you lie on this if you want to share!

Uhhh… cheers!? 🥂 🍻 🤣😅
Moms, here’s dinner sorted. Merry Christmas. 👌🏻

3 fun partner yoga moves you can do with children

1. Wide legged forward fold - sit facing each other legs wide. Grab hold of each others hands and gently pull forward and backward. “Row row row your boat” works nicely here!

2. Butterfly rocks - sit with feet together, knees apart. Rock on your seat side to side. You can use your arms either side of you to support. “Rock a bye baby” is a good song here. You can all fall down at the end which is quite fun.

3. Pretzel kisses - sit with one leg out long and the other knee bent. Take one hand behind your back and reach the other forward. Partner does the same. Reach for each other hands and see if you can give each other a kiss. Don’t worry if you don’t get it, or if it doesn’t make sense - the fun is in figuring it out together. Make a tangled pretzel shape ❤️ Change sides.
THERE IS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THIS CHILD PUTTING ON A SWIMMING CAP THAT SQUISHES HIS FACE ALL UP THAT MAKES ME WANT TO EAT HIM ALLLLLLLL UP AND HAVE TEN MILLION MORE BABIES!!!!!!!!!! 🥹🥹🥹😍😍😍😍😍😍

I’m Ché (pronounced “shay”)

Mom of two, currently re-finding my identity after this huge life shift: what is important to me, what I do for a living, the clothes I wear.

I’m currently “alcohol-questioning” meaning I still love a glass of wine, and also seriously questioning what ACTUAL value alcohol has in my life.

I’ll never not be creating something. At the moment I am focusing on children’s book illustration. I believe creative expression is essential for thriving in life, ESPECIALLY in motherhood.

What about you?
