a lotta life to love

I avoided merino wool for years.
The price never made sense to me, especially for kids who outgrow everything so quickly. It felt like one of those things people swear by, but you don’t actually need.

This winter, I gave it one season to convince me.

And I hate to admit it, but we reached for it more than almost anything else.

It regulates temperature better than what we were using before, which meant fewer outfit changes and less back and forth trying to get layers right. It handled moisture better, and it didn’t need to be washed constantly.

But more than anything, it just made things simpler.

Less overthinking. Less packing. Less adjusting throughout the day.
I still don’t think you need a ton of it, and I’m not replacing everything with merino.

But it’s one of the few things I’ve tried where I actually noticed a difference in how our days went.
A constant game of “Where’s Waldo?”
Most families assume they need more before they start getting outside more.

More gear.
More time.
A better plan.

But in reality, the thing that makes this sustainable is usually much simpler.

Your car.

Not just as a way to get somewhere, but as something that lowers the barrier to starting. It gives you flexibility. It gives you a way out when things aren’t working, and a way to stay when they are.

That’s what makes it easier to try, easier to adjust, and easier to keep doing it.

We road trip, we sleep in the car, and we stay longer than planned. Not because we have some perfect setup, but because we’ve learned to use what we already have more intentionally.

Most of the time, it’s not about adding more.

It’s about using what you already have in a way that actually supports the life you’re trying to live.

Part ✌🏼 in San Diego
Fine, San Diego. I get the hype.
today eden came home proud because she earned extra recess at school.

ten extra minutes outside.

and while i celebrated with her, it also made me pause.

kids spend so much of their day being asked to sit still. quiet bodies. quiet voices. controlled energy. yet the place where they can run, breathe, and reset is often treated like a reward instead of a need.

i understand why schools do it. systems need incentives. teachers are working with a lot inside a structure that isn’t always built for childhood.
but it still made me wonder something.

how many kids labeled hyper, distracted, or difficult are really just kids with energy that was never meant to stay contained all day?

how many kids just need more trees.
more fresh air. more room to run.

i’m curious what others think about this.

do you think outdoor time should be something kids earn… or something built into the rhythm of childhood?
