So, 18-year-old me drove down to LA to meet with the same agencies who scouted me, only to be told I was “too tall for their roster.”
Back in the early 2010s, most agencies capped women at 5’11” (maybe 6’0” if you were lucky). I’m 6’4”. So I started lying at castings because I knew I didn’t fit their rulebook, but I still believed I belonged in the room.
I’ll never forget one big agency, who was very interested in me after seeing my portfolio, measuring me in the back in front of the whole casting office and watching the person’s face drop, and hearing, “oh… you’re actually 6’4”… we can’t take you.” I acted surprised and apologized (like I had done something wrong?) and they told me “maybe in the future.”
It stung, but I’m stubborn in the best way.
So I kept showing up. I signed with a few boutique agencies, booked runway, print, and TV work, and started making connections. Then a news outlet reached out with a story about “the model with the longest legs,” which snowballed into more work, more travel, and more opportunities than I ever expected.
If I had stopped after that first rejection, or the second, or the fifth, I would’ve missed all of it.
I wouldn’t have met the people I met, had the experiences I had, or been able to tell other tall girls, “you’re not too anything, this industry just isn’t built for us yet.”
I’m grateful I didn’t shrink myself to fit.
And I’m even more grateful that I get to show others they don’t have to, either. 💛
