Second Finale Fitting. Tomorrow is the runway. | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale
Placement: Top 3 Finalist

This was the second finale fitting and the runway was only a day away. I was running on nothing. Low energy, no sleep, and still so much left to finish. Aurora was frustrated that the hand-sewing wasn’t done yet, but time had been so limited and every minute counted.

For this fitting, I paired pink with black to balance strength and tenderness, structure and emotion, bringing those contrasts together as a full look on the model. Seeing it worn gave me a jolt of excitement and relief, even while my nerves were fully kicking in. The finale look was still coming together and both sleeves still needed to be attached. The pressure was real.

This collection is rooted in my family’s story. It’s inspired by my parents’ journey as Vietnamese refugees and the legacy they built through resilience, sacrifice, and love. Every decision, every detail, carries that weight and meaning.

I was exhausted, anxious, and pushing through on pure instinct, but seeing the work on the models reminded me why I started. Tomorrow, everything would finally be seen.

You can’t rush hand-sewing! | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale
Placement: Top 3 Finalist

This was one of the hardest days. I was completely exhausted, racing against time, and trying not to spiral as the runway finale loomed closer. There was still so much to do, and every decision felt heavy.

I was deep into preparing the grey hoodie look for the menswear outfit, hand-sewing details that couldn’t be rushed no matter how tired I was. This was the moment where patience, precision, and belief in the work had to override panic. Pushed to my limits, trying to stay true to myself while adapting under pressure, I felt like I was losing control and finding it again at the same time.

This was about discipline. About trusting my hands when my mind was overwhelmed. About showing up even when I had nothing left.

Some days aren’t glamorous.
They’re quiet, intense, and brutally honest.

This was one of them.

1st finale fitting. Real emotions, real exhaustion. | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale
Placement: Top 3 Finalist

This was the first time seeing my finale looks come to life on the models. Exciting, terrifying, and emotional all at once. I was already running on fumes at this point, but seeing the garments move made everything feel real.

This fitting introduced some of the more relatable pieces in the collection. The orchid-inspired look carries deep meaning for me. Orchids are my mother’s favourite flower, and this was my way of expressing love, softness, and gratitude through design. I also created a sportswear backwards tuxedo jacket with utility hardware and we mutually decided to let the hem of the skirt kiss the floor.

The collection as a whole is rooted in family, identity, and legacy. It draws from my parents’ journey as Vietnamese refugees, my father’s utilitarian workwear, and cultural references from Vietnam, blending streetwear, utility, and couture into one story.

I felt proud, but also overwhelmed. Seeing the work this way made it clear how much still needed to be done. I was happy, nervous, exhausted, and very much at my limit.

This was the moment where the vision started to breathe, even if I was barely keeping up.

Pink is revolutionary. 👚 | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale
Placement: Top 3 Finalist

Back together and right back into the chaos.

After seven weeks apart, Leeland Curtis, Curtis, and I finally reuniteand it immediately feels like no time passed.

They surprised me from the start, literally hiding just to scare me. Leeland popping out of a box. Curtis lurking behind another. I missed this energy.

We caught up, described our collections, picked models, and laughed through the stress. Curtis didn’t miss a beat with his shady-but-hilarious commentary, calling my choice of pink “revolutionary.”

In a process this intense, these moments of humour and levity matter just as much as the work.

The roots behind CHARLES LU. Meet the Lu family. | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale
Placement: Top 3 Finalist

In this moment, Aurora James (our mentor) meets my family for the very first time.

At this point in the process, my family still has no idea what the collection is about. They don’t know the inspiration, the references, or the story being told. Only Aurora does. I had kept the collection completely under wraps for nearly four weeks while working 16–18 hour days to bring it to life.

What sparked everything was meeting my grandmother on my mother’s side for the very first time earlier this year. That moment opened a door I didn’t know existed. It led me to uncover my parents’ story as Vietnamese refugees and the life they built through sacrifice, resilience, and perseverance. That discovery became the foundation of the collection and quietly shaped every decision I made.

Sitting in that space with my mother, father, and my oldest sister, Suzzanne, was incredibly touching. They are my biggest supporters and the force that drives me. They’ve witnessed the difficult journey I’ve had in fashion, the setbacks, the sacrifices, and the persistence it took to get here.

What they don’t yet know is that the collection is about them. Their journey. Their legacy. The story unfolding on the runway is an extension of everything they’ve lived and everything they’ve given. I wanted them to experience it for the first time the same way the audience will.

They’ll be at the finale, cheering me on. And they’ll see the collection for the very first time as it hits the runway, culminating my entire Project Runway Canada experience.

This is where I come from.
This is the story that shaped me.
This is my heart. 🖤

“Charles is his biggest critic and his harshest judge.” | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale
Placement: Top 3 Finalist

I’m sharing my finale collection with Aurora James for the very first time. No one else had seen it before this moment.

This collection began far from the runway. It began in Vietnam, early 2025, when I met my grandmother on my mother’s side for the first time. I had never spoken to her before. Standing in front of her, overwhelmed by emotion, something shifted in me. A connection I didn’t know how to name finally took shape.

After Project Runway Canada, I knew I was ready to create this collection. Not just as a designer — but as a son.
This work is a love letter to my family. It’s about my parents’ journey as refugees coming to Canada because of the war in Vietnam, and the life they built through resilience, sacrifice, and perseverance. It’s about honouring where I come from.

I pulled from my father’s blue-collar workwear, the utility he wore every day as an entrepreneur, and married it with elements of Vietnam. My mother’s favourite flower, the orchid. The traditional áo dài. Streetwear, utility, and couture woven together as one language.

Everything clicked when I found my parents’ wedding photos. That was the moment I understood why my finale look had to be white.

This collection is deeply personal. The most emotional work I’ve ever made. I went inward, sat with memory and feeling, and let the designs pour out honestly. My moodboard was filled with family photographs and fragments of our history.

This was an internal journey as much as a creative one.

Thank you, Aurora, for holding space for this story and for being the first to witness it.

This is my roots.
This is my family.
This is my heart.

WE’RE TOP 3! 🪡📺💎 | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 9: Road to Finale

This episode is where everything truly begins.

We officially found out that the Top 3 will each be creating a 10-look collection, with $10,000 and 7 weeks to bring our visions to life.

The finalists are Curtis, Leeland, and myself and the energy in that room was pure excitement. After months of pressure and intensity, we were genuinely joyful, celebrating like kids and soaking in the moment.

Before the runway, we received guidance from the judges. Hearing that my work is immediately recognizable — that you always know a Charles look when it hits the runway — while also being encouraged to push even further and wow them like never before, was exactly the motivation I needed heading into this final chapter.

Thank you to Coco Rocha, Jeanne Beker, Spencer Badu, and Ken Downing for guiding us to this point, and to our mentor Aurora James for her perspective and support throughout this journey.

And to my finalists, thank you to Leeland for always being a constant source of support, and to Curtis for keeping things fun and light when the pressure was on. The bond we built together made this experience truly special.

Next stop: back to our hometowns, where Aurora will be visiting to check in on our collections.

Episode 8: The Final Challenge Before the Finale — “Archive Edit”
Placement: Winner 🏆

Before finding out who would make the Top 3, we had our final challenge mentorship with Aurora James.

This episode was about refinement — stepping back, reassessing intention, and making sure the work clearly communicated who we are as designers.

For my look, I stayed true to my design language, focusing on structure, proportion, and the balance between ease and elevation.

Aurora brought a sharp point of view. Her critiques were sometimes tough, but often delivered with humour — moments that cut through the tension and made the process feel human. While the experience is always layered and produced, I appreciated being challenged to think differently, question my instincts, and grow, even in small but meaningful ways.

Right before the finale, clarity matters more than comfort.

On to the finale. 🖤✨

The intersection between casual and couture🪡🧵 | PROJECT RUNWAY CANADA x CHARLES LU

Episode 8: The Final Challenge Before the Finale — “Archive Edit”
Placement: Winner 🏆

For the first time this season, we were given complete creative freedom. The Archive Edit challenge was about showing the judges what they can truly expect from us as designers — our point of view, our voice, our future. With only four designers left, the stakes were high: the winner would automatically advance to the finale.

I chose to tap into what feels most authentic to me — the intersection of streetwear, couture, and casual luxury. I wanted to elevate the familiar hoodie and tracksuit, blending comfort with craftsmanship and precision. This look was about refinement without losing ease.

At the fabric store, I couldn’t find the heather grey fleece I originally envisioned, so I pivoted to an off-white/cream fleece. The material itself wasn’t thick or structured enough, which meant re-engineering it entirely — bonding and padding each layer, then backing it with a stiffer material to create shape, weight, and presence. Every decision was intentional.

More than any other challenge, this was the moment I felt most like myself. Designing this look felt instinctive, honest, and deeply personal — a true reflection of my design language.

My incredible model, Aubrie Allen, brought the look to life with such effortless elegance. On her, it felt casual yet undeniably luxurious — relaxed, refined, and quietly powerful. She exuded exactly the energy I envisioned.

Winning this challenge meant everything to me. It confirmed that being authentic — fully and unapologetically — is what carried me forward. Every judge connected with the look, and that validation at this stage of the competition is something I’ll never forget. Thank you.

On to the finale. 🖤✨
