And yes - sometimes it really is exactly that. But our studio staff does much more behind the scenes to provide this pottery haven works for our Members smoothly.
Behind every finished cup, bowl or sculpture there are also kiln loads, glaze tests, studio maintenance, carrying clay bags, reclaiming buckets of slip, answering emails, preparing workshops, helping Members, cleaning tools, planning shelves and solving small daily crises.
Running a pottery Studio is part craftsmanship, part hospitality, part logistics and part community building.
Chamotte was never meant to be just a room with a kiln and clay. We wanted to create a living, breathing place where people feel inspired, welcomed and supported in their creative process.
Some days are exhausting. Some days are magical. Most days are both at once.
And honestly - we wouldn’t trade it for anything.

So, how does the firing process actually work in an open pottery Studio?
Each Member has their own dedicated shelf space to store works in progress while building, trimming or drying pieces at their own pace. Once your work is completely dry and ready for the first firing, you place it on the Bisque Firing shelf.
From there, we carefully load the kiln together with works of other Members and workshop participants. One firing cycle usually takes around 24 hours from loading to cooling down.
After the bisque firing, all pieces return to the shared shelf with finished bisques, ready for the next step - glazing, decorating, adding colours.
Then the pieces move once again - this time onto the Glaze Firing shelf, waiting for their final transformation in the kiln.
And finally… the best part: finished ceramics return to the pickup shelf, often appearing first on our Instagram Stories before being collected by their creators 🖤
Because we fire at least one bisque kiln and one glaze kiln every single week - and usually much more than that - pieces move through the Studio surprisingly quickly. Things rarely sit around for long here.

Our Introduction Month is the perfect first step into the world of ceramics - whether you dream about learning wheel throwing, or simply finding a creative ritual in the middle of busy city life.
Over three meetings in June, you’ll slowly and thoroughly discover how pottery really works - from handbuilding and wheel throwing to trimming, glazing, studio organisation and understanding the full ceramic process. We designed this course not as a quick entertainment workshop, but as a real foundation for independent studio practice.
We recommend this course to everyone because ceramics teaches patience, focus and confidence in creating with your own hands. It’s a space to slow down, meet inspiring people, and develop a skill that can stay with you for years.
At Chamotte, you’re not joining just a course - you’re stepping into Hamburg’s growing pottery community. Many of our Members started exactly here, with zero experience and a bit of curiosity. Today they spend evenings together glazing, throwing, exchanging ideas and building friendships around clay.

One of the most beautiful things about Chamotte is how many different stories meet around the same table. Some of our Members are creators or artists - but many of us had never been creative before; most of our Members had never touched clay before joining our Introduction Course.
And honestly? That’s exactly the point.
You do not need experience to begin. You don’t need to already “be creative enough”. A bit of curiosity, patience and passion is often all it takes. The rest comes with practice, shared knowledge, small failures, experimentation and hours spent at the Studio surrounded by inspiring people.
Watching someone arrive unsure and slowly develop their own style, confidence and relationship with clay is one of the most rewarding parts of building this Collective.
A few months later, suddenly beautiful handmade cups, plates and sculptures appear on the shelves - pieces carrying personality, imperfections and real human touch.
Ceramics can be learned. Passion can grow. And the results can honestly surprise you.

This workshop is less about “perfect pottery” and more about entering into a dialogue with clay.
You’ll learn the coil technique and use it to build large, expressive sculptural forms from your own sketch or idea. But most importantly – you’ll learn what happens when the material refuses to cooperate. How to rescue a collapsing wall, how to slow down, when to insist on your vision, and when to listen to what the clay itself is trying to tell you.
Because pottery is never fully about control. The magic happens somewhere between your intention and the material’s own character.
Four hours of intensive work, dirty hands, full concentration – and surprisingly powerful results. Every time, we’re amazed by what participants create during this workshop. You’ll be too!

Meet three main pottery techniques, most popular among craftsmen: hand building, slip casting and the wheel.
With slip casting, you can design your own form and reproduce it applying various colours or customizing with glazes.
At Chamotte we teach and encourage you to try out all the three techniques, guiding you at different levels of experience, so that you can always find a trick to improve your ceramic game. ✨
