European male painters couldn’t simply walk into an Ottoman harem. Instead, they reconstructed imagined worlds in their studios—using props, models and fantasy—and presented them to Western audiences with the authority of realism.
That’s what makes Orientalism so fascinating. It wasn’t merely documenting the East; it was manufacturing an image of it. An image that could be admired, consumed and, ultimately, used to reinforce ideas about cultural superiority and difference.
Today, these paintings invite us to do two things at once:
admire their extraordinary craftsmanship,
and question the gaze that created them.
