As students return to classrooms this week, teachers in British Columbia are worried about the challenges they face with ongoing staff shortages amid a rapid growth in the student population.

Surrey Teachers Association president Jatinder Bir told CBC News the continuing shortage is causing students to lose the support they need and that teachers have been raising concerns about the shortage for years.

B.C. Education Minister Rachna Singh says that labour shortages are happening in many industries, including K-12 education, and that the province is looking into different strategies for alleviating the teacher shortage.

Dani Cooper often thought about death, with hope for what could come after theirs.

"I'm leaving and I have so much to pray for, for the deaths to cease, for hope to build, for action to take root," Cooper wrote in a poem last September.

Two months later, police shot and killed Cooper, who was in psychosis and threatening their mother and neighbours with a paring knife at their home in North Vancouver, B.C.

Cooper was a poet, writer and activist who had advocated for police to be removed from mental health crisis responses.

Last month, B.C.'s police oversight agency cleared the North Vancouver RCMP officer who shot Cooper of any wrongdoing, finding the officer was reasonable and justified to use lethal force.

Now Cooper's family is picking up Cooper's cause, calling for the removal of police from mental health crisis calls and looking for accountability they say won't come from the Independent Investigations Office.

Is it a bird, is it a boat or is it the mythical Ogopogo?

That's the question Kelowna visitors and residents were pondering in an archival CBC video from 1980, when they saw a serpent-like creature in Okanagan Lake.

Ogopogo, considered to be B.C.'s best-known lake monster, has been spotted as far back as 1872.

B.C. recently made opioid agonist treatment (OAT) medications, which help curb opioid withdrawal symptoms and pain, free for anyone covered under MSP.

Amm, who only goes by his first name, is among the more-than 30,000 British Columbians undergoing the treatment.

Doctors prescribe drugs like methadone or suboxone, which help patients minimize withdrawal symptoms, find stability and work toward recovery.

But some patients say more than medications, they also need other types of support, like housing and nutritious meals.
