The Chevron/ Stripe/ Asanoha collection collage together favourite motifs drawn from varied sources, heraldry, modernism and Japanese pattern design. Frances enjoys the process of sampling and collage, giving a new twist to familiar motifs and creating unexpected relationships. The painterly surfaces are created through a rich colour pallet of coral and ochre, contrasted against soft greys and dense blacks. She plays with surface finish, placing matt vitreous slip next to glossy glaze, to create a dynamic contrast. Hand-drawn enamel transfers create an additional layer of mark-making which becomes apparent on closer inspection.
Asanoha is a traditional Japanese geometric pattern made of overlapping six-pointed stars and hexagons, resembling hemp leaves, often used on Kimono textiles, woodworking, and Sashiko embroidery.

Five stars from Dominic Cavendish in The Telegraph today and many more great reviews coming in.
It is unflinching, heartbreaking, real, and to quote the words of Sarah Crompton for
‘The plays of Alexander Zeldin reach parts that other plays do not reach. With an unstinting gaze, he turns his attention to subjects and people that society would prefer to turn away from. He insists we look.
He asks we care.’
Our recent Brain Tumour Book exhibition by Leah Jensen felt similarly important - not easy, but a life experience that needed to be shared. People came, they cried, they marvelled and each viewer brought their own personal experiences to the show.
As most of the audience will be doing I am sure, I cried quietly and brought my own life experiences of grief and loss to this play, a safe place to grieve again. Alzheimer’s cruelly took our mother from us in the most devastating way possible. There is no escaping the end and people get old. This play confronts us with this in an incredible way. You could have heard a pin drop at times.
Congratulations to all involved. Until 11 July

First up a doctor, scientist and artist, interview with on her BRAIN TUMOUR BOOK.
For years, 35-year-old Leah Jensen brushed off persistent headaches and forgetfulness as simple exhaustion. That changed during a 2020 bar shift in South East London. What began as a suspected migraine quickly spiraled: Leah’s vision blurred, speech became unrecognisable noise, and her own vocabulary vanished—leaving her able to utter only the word “um.” Following an emergency hospital admission, the artist from Cornwall’s “clay country” began a grueling eight-month medical odyssey that ultimately revealed a Grade 3 brain tumor
Leah, an acclaimed sculptor and ceramicist known for her work at the British Ceramics Biennial, Design Miami, and London Design Festival, recalled the moment her health took a turn. In 2020, during the brief window between lockdowns, she was balancing her art career with a job at a London pub. Despite the heavy COVID-19 restrictions and the demands of table service, she initially tried to push through what she assumed was a standard migraine. However, the pain intensified until her vision began to fracture into strange, “pixelated” patterns.
During her recovery, Leah turned to her lifelong “safety blanket”: creativity. Much like the detailed drawings she used as an escape during her youth, she began an intricate sewing project the very morning of her diagnosis.
Part sketchbook and part diary, the project serves as a “visceral” record of her experience, incorporating hospital photos and fleeting thoughts to combat her fading memory. “I look at the book and see things I have no memory of,” she explains.
Beyond her art, Leah is now dedicated to raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity, a cause deeply personal to her journey.

This is a much deserved accolade for Katharine who has created textiles for over 30 years. Katharine’s work is widely acclaimed, in 2016 she received the Theo Moorman Award and, in the same year, she was shortlisted for the Cordis Prize. In 2019, she was shortlisted for both the Cordis Prize and the Kate Derum Award. A year later, her work was included in the exhibition Common Thread at the New Art Centre, Wiltshire and last year, in 2025, she was nominated for the inaugural Sussex Craft Award.
Many thanks to the team at the V&A for making this acquisition happen.
