I threw a New Years Eve Party as part of my way of saying goodbye to Hale O Mahuka, the home of my heart for 25 years. I invited everyone I know and love and at sunset we all began to gather here in this place on the point, a place of mana and memories. Theme was a rager and my friends did not hold back. Jock Sutherland was in charge of the bonfire and as said, put safety third, spectacle first. helped make it all happen, encouraging me to have a party in the first place along with. Guy was behind the DJ booth keeping the amp cool while Jack played a storming impromptu set taking us through midnight. Jenny made me a cake with a chocolate gazebo topper, showing me once again love really is a pink cake and made me my second coconut cake. my bff came from New York for Christmas and seemlessly knew what needed to be done - and swept and tidied and then got changed and slunk around the dance floor taking us back to our rave days in London in the 90s. We nearly killed the dance floor with some 90s downers but then the lovely stepped in and took the dj booth over and it was party time and some.
🕶️🕺🏼🕺🏼🕺🏼🥽⚡️⚡️⚡️🍸🍸Spanky and Celia super 8’d the whole thing and did a million party deco jobs without me even knowing like back in festival days.

There was a big ham and Kings Rolls and about 29 different mustards and Sheila Theroux made delicious pork butt and brought it down from Pupukea and made a superb coleslaw 🤘🏽

Liz and Christian made an ice luge which was kind of incredible as I had never seen one IRL only in frat party films and a cowbell was rung everytime someone did a shot. Nina hosted a mocktail bar and kept us hydrated 💫☄️
It was an old school North Shore party hands on and no frills just being together a week before I move.

Most of all: people brought their love for this place and we made it a night we will not forget on this point in the Pacific filled with mana, surrounded by friends, beneath the stars and big beautiful Waimea my friend and companion for all this time casting its magic spell and blessings on us. ☄️🌑🌞🌈🐋🕊️
Her name is Summer Lei. She lives next door to me, has done for 9 years with her parents Kris and Kori. Before that she lived two houses away. I’ve known her since she was born. She was 11 years old yesterday. She is brave, kind, smart, funny, inquisitive, talented, determined, hikes further than I ever could. Surfs. Plays soccer. Plays the ukulele. Sings. Draws. Videos herself telling me her news when I’m not in Hawaii and sends me long messages. I send them back. We talk. We muck about. She can handle a large tripod spotlight almost as tall as her training it on the stage for the entirety of her school play (Spongebob the Musical, it was excellent.) This year she is hoping to act in the play and I can’t wait to see it. She feeds my fish for me when I am gone.. Being parted from her during Covid was very difficult. When I came back after Trump lifted the travel ban and got out of the truck she screamed with joy as she ran towards me. Kris and Kori her parents are hard working public school teachers. Kori has just taken on being union rep for teachers. She works long hours. She cares about her community. She longboards like a dream and makes me do things I think I can’t do - like jump off cliffs. I love them. They are family. It’s been a joy to be so near to her and see her grow into the young woman she is becoming. Happy Birthday my Summer Lei and see you v soon. #summerlei #waimeabay #ohana
My gorgeous house, Penfoye, in Cornwall is available to rent for a week in September and some of October. There has been a cancellation and this is a rare opportunity to rent it while I am away.

Penfoye was named as one of the ten best places to stay in Cornwall by The Times earlier this year, and is a really special house. Link in bio to the article.

Five miles from Fowey, Penfoye is set on the banks of a beautiful tidal estuary, surrounded by ancient oak woodland. There are steps leading from the gate at the bottom of the garden down to a private quay and beach. Wind in the Willows is believed to have been written within sight of the house.

Very peaceful and private, the house sleeps 6 and has lots of space for everyone. There is a large well equipped kitchen with a long refectory table and doors which open onto a terrace and direct views of the water. There are lots of books and sofas and comfortable places to read and the long room drawing room has two log burners and sofas to sink into. Dog friendly, with a large garden and kitchen garden, Penfoye is a heavenly place to escape to. Think birdwatching and boating, sea swimming and lots of fantastic places to eat nearby. You can hire a boat for a week and moor it on the quay at the bottom of the garden and explore the local beaches and creeks. You can walk to the village of Lerryn through the Ethy woods and to the local pub there and fantastic village shop. Available to book from Friday 12th September. Please dm me for booking enquiries.
For one night only. Night Blooming Cereus. Unfurl at midnight. Gone by morning. I’d like to be like that. The flowers bloom once, and close with the morning sun. They start to open between 8 and 9 pm, fully unfurling around midnight. The flowers close shortly after dawn. Then they die that day. A smaller flush opened last week with the full moon. This is the biggest flush of blooms I have seen opening on this wall. In several months the flowers will have turned into pitaya fruit, full of antioxidants. The bees are so happy this morning ✨
I am very fortunate to be on the Board of The Merwin Conservancy, a non-profit organisation rooted in the convictions of renowned American poet W.S.Merwin, President Obama’s Poet Laureate and friend and contemporary of Ted Hughes. Based in Hawaii, imagines ways of engaging with place, poetry and practice and conserves Merwin’s home and palm forest on the island of Maui in Hawaii. I help to host The Green Room series in which leading voices inspire conversations about nature, the environment, language and the imagination. We are honoured to welcome the extraordinary poet, theologian and conflict mediator Pádraig Ó Tuama as a 2025 Resident who is here in Hawaii living and working from the home of Merwin in the palm forest. Pádraig will give a reading of his work at the Honolulu Museum of Art on Thursday, July 31 at 7 pm. Tickets are still available.

Pádraig Ó Tuama (b. 1975 Cork, Ireland) is a poet with interests in conflict, language and religion. He presents Poetry Unbound from On Being Studios, and has published two anthologies (2022, 2025, both with WW Norton) from that podcast. In early 2025 Copper Canyon Press published Kitchen Hymns, his fourth poetry collection. A freelance artist, one of Ó Tuama’s projects is poet in residence with the Cooperation and Conflict Resolution Center at Columbia University. He splits his time between Belfast and New York City.

These programs are made possible through generous support from Nancy & Larry Mohr, Halekulani, and Green Room Patrons & Hosts.

Sag Harbour, July ‘05. Hampton’s bliss with my favourite people: my best friend, my god son, Clemmy and Hugo 🥰❤️🦀🦞🍸🤸‍♂️
As if this beach could get anymore beautiful. On Gibson Beach, Sag Harbour there appeared anonymous sculptures. Made of bamboo and pieces of broken shell, they are created by someone who wants to share beauty with the rest of us. Anonymous sinewy wisps of wonder and beauty.
Reunited with Twig ❤️ hoping we can both get back to Hawaii together soon and have an adventure together across America and through the Pacific - he loves boats - and we hate to be parted. Thank you to my beloved Helen for living with him at Cliff while I was away and and and for such warm and beautiful Easter homecomings ❤️ and sublime stays x
My dear friend Amy singing her really beautiful rendition of Aloha ‘Oe as two friends catch some fun waves below my yard, just before sunset. Mahalo Amy for your magic and friendship. Ha’aheo ka ua i na pali

Pua ‘ahihi lehua o uka

Aloha ‘oe, aloha ‘oe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
One fond embrace
A ho’i a’e au
Until we meet again. #amyhanaialii #alohaoé #waimeabay
