I recently asked myself the question: how do I have fun? As someone who is a type A, eldest daughter to my core, I honestly have to work to find joy in almost everything. Except when I am in the water.
I think it’s because there are no expectations of me. I can simply be.
It’s not like a craft, where I have to perform and the end result will be judged (by me…I’m the one who is judging). It’s not like when I’m creating, and there is a meter of success to my creativity. It’s not like when I’m reading, where there is a measure of comprehension. It’s not like when I’m antiquing, and the success of the treasure hunt has its own effects.
when I swim or plunge, there is nothing that comes out of it. There is no standard to hold myself to. I can let go. In the cold water, I lose the pain in my legs that follows me everywhere else.
I wanted to document this as a marker for the year, and to invite you to find something that truly brings you the freedom type of fun that is only found in childhood. When putting this video together, I did think twice (or more) about posting it, my insecurities creeping in. But I hope I am fostering a safe space to come as you are.

we had visited in the summer and decided for sure it was the place we wanted to call home someday. While we had been debating moving for a while, and I had wanted to move here since I was a little girl, we had never been to the province before.
after a busy autumn of 2024 with work and our honeymoon, my husband Calin, along with my family, and I talked about making this dream of moving across the country a reality.
we didn’t think it would be a possibility for us at the time as sole proprietors. But we decided to try. In January of last year, we began our search for our first home. We wanted a place to build a legacy, a forever home. It took a lot of searching, a lot of heartbreak, a lot of hard work, hours of scouring real estate websites, another trip, dozens of phone calls and video calls, and at least a hundred emails.
six months later we found our paradise. In another couple months we made the move. And now the year is coming to a close, and we get to spend it here. This was one of the hardest, but also one of the most beautiful years of our lives.
we feel so at home here. We are so grateful.

tradition is something that runs deep in my family. We have always carried rituals from Christmas to Christmas, and I’m so glad that my husband Calin has embraced many of the traditions we enjoy. I have been seeing a lot of talk this year about the magic that women bring to Christmas, and without the women in our lives there wouldn’t be much of the magic that we experience this time of year. I am grateful that my sister and I have teamed up to pick up that torch; and that my husband participates with joy in making the magic - not needing to be convinced or coerced that there is needed labour behind this magic. I am blessed to be part of our little team to make Christmas feel special.
sometimes I do question whether it is worth all this effort. But then I remember that that is what makes life worth living: it’s the details and the care that goes into beauty. It’s the meaning behind the rituals, even if the rituals themselves don’t make a lot of sense. It’s holding on to the nostalgia, because it evokes a sense of memories and belonging and community.
I am part Ukrainian and English, and grew up in a Moravian church; so many of our traditions lie in that. Our traditions have become a part of who we are.
here are just a few of our favourite traditions:
every Christmas Eve, we honour a Ukrainian Christmas tradition, Sviata Vechera or Holy Supper. We do not follow all twelve dishes or every rule, but we keep the spirit of it: a seafood-focused, meatless dinner.
we always dress up for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Dinner, even though it’s just our little family at home. For us, getting dressed up is our way of saying this day matters - it turns an ordinary meal into something that feels special and worth remembering.
Christmas morning starts in our coziest pyjamas with the Royal Christmas Message. It’s a quiet moment before the day unfolds; a pause that helps us reflect on this past year as we sip our coffees or teas.

we foraged everything we needed from our homestead (except the leftover florists tape and wire we had from our wedding).
some pliable branches, greenery, and decorative berries is all that’s needed! All topped with a big red bow I had thrifted a couple years ago.
I’m sure a wreath like this would have ran us a couple hundred dollars, but instead it only took about 3 afternoons spread over the course of a couple weeks (a little more time than expected hahaha).
the weather changes quite quickly here in our historic home by the sea, but we love it so much.
tomorrow we finish decorating the outside!

the kind of decoration that belongs in an old fashioned Christmas, cranberry hard and looks beautiful draped across a real Christmas tree. It adds a lot of depth in tone, contrasts in texture to a tree, and has that perfect Christmas-y red colour.
this is one of my favourite homemade ornaments; especially if you’re dreaming of a Little Women Christmas filled with quiet evenings and meaningful memories.
how to make cranberry garland:
♥️ gather fresh cranberries (or frozen works too!), strong thread or twine (I find dark thread doesn’t show like white thread does), and a needle.
♥️ thread the needle, tying a knot at the end. I secure mine by wrapping it around and through the first cranberry again before making my knot.
♥️ pierce each cranberry through the center, sliding it down the thread. I find it stays on the thread better if you go through the eye, as it’s tougher.
♥️ alternate with popcorn if you want a more varied look.
♥️ create strands as long or short as you like. I personally find wingspan length strands easier to manage.
♥️drape immediately - fresh cranberries are brightest when used right away. Over time, they’ll dry naturally, deepening in colour. The shiny texture goes away and they become more like raisins. Still beautiful, but less likely to reflect light. This weekend is the perfect time for this project if you’re wanting them to look fresh for Christmas!

there’s something comforting about an old fashioned Christmas - the kind that smells like citrus & pine, where decorations are made slowly by hand, and Christmas memories linger.
orange slice decorations feel straight out of a Little Women Christmas: simple, beautiful, and meant to last. They’re perfect for our coastal homestead tucked into our real Christmas tree, but they can also be strung along as a garland.
how to make dried orange slices:
🍊 slice oranges thinly (about ¼ inch). Thinner slices dry more evenly.
🍊pat dry with a towel to remove excess moisture.
🍊arrange on a baking rack (this helps air circulate) set over a baking sheet. If you don’t have a rack (like me!), you can place on parchment paper and flip periodically.
🍊bake at >200°F (95°C) or as low as your oven can go until dry, flipping every hour or so. Mine took about 8 hours, but each oven (and slice thickness) is different, so be sure to check on them after about 3 hours and take it from there.
🍊cool completely - they’ll firm up as they dry.
🍊to turn them into homemade ornaments, simply thread twine, ribbon, yarn, or thread through the centre with a plastic yarn needle, or poke a small hole near the edge with a skewer if you don’t have one.
🍊you can leave them to hang on their own or add cinnamon sticks, berries, or other greenery for a layered, nostalgic look.

It’s been a long road to get here.
I feel like I have so much more to say; so many stories to tell about the how, the why, the where.
and I have found our first (and maybe forever) home in Nova Scotia.
I have dreamed of buying an old house in the Maritimes ever since I was a little girl. One of my first favourite books was Anne of Green Gables, with Anne finding the place where she belonged. I remember being around 10 or 12 years old, sitting at the family computer, and searching up historic houses on the coast. When I was 17, I wrote myself a letter, describing a quiet piece of land with mature trees, room for a garden; a character home, room for a family. Maybe a fireplace, maybe an attic - lots of nooks and secrets. I dreamed of being by the water; I am most at peace by the water.
This is the house of my dreams.
We’ve come a long way to get here; packed up all of our antiques, our business, our life; said goodbye to dear friends, our apartment, where we said our vows; and drove over 5000km from our rental in Calgary to our acreage on the East Coast.
