In my lifetime, I have never imagined meeting a legend Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Not only did he take his precious time to watch Carving the Divine but gave a beautiful review and met me during his official visit to Japan for his peace conferences. On that day, he had lunch with a former minister Yukio Hatoyama and at night met me at a small Izakaya (bar) in Tokyo. Everything was surreal. Thank you so much, Mr. Gandhi and his team for this opportunity. I will take this in my heart for the rest of my life!

“Saw ‘Carving the Divine’, a beautifully-made documentary by Yujiro Seki. I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful documentary. My compliments to the director. He has beautifully portrayed the spiritual aspect of Buddhism through the learning of the sculptures and the evolution of both Master and apprentice in the art of sculpting as well as in the realization of the deep spirituality inherent in that art form and the deep understanding of Buddhism both Indian as well as Japanese. It is a feast for the eyes, mind and soul. My compliments to all who are associated with creating such a beautiful work of art.”

The Movie Night event was successfully finished!

We watched “Carving the Divine” filmed by Yujiro Seki, who is a film director and producer of this documentary.

We enjoyed the world of Japanese Buddhist sculptors by learning about the excellent techniques they devoted themselves to acquiring through long training and their passion for curving something divine. The elaborated sculptors can evoke people’s minds toward worshipping rather than seeing because the shape that emerges in front of us is more art than conventional tools.

We couldn’t help to think that these handcrafted Buddhas are derived from the Buddhas’ hearts filled with Wisdom and Compassion.

A great time indeed flies by fast! Thank you so much for Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, Buddhist Study Center Hawaii and Hawaii Buddhist Council for hosting Carving the Divine premiere in Hawaii! Shout out to Bishop Eric Matsumoto, Rev. Daido Baba, Rev, Yukika Hasebe, Executive Director John Masuoka and all the people who helped put the screening together. Thank you so much all the audience who came and asked me interesting questions. There was a display of Buddhist artwork (including Buddhist statues) set up in the temple's social hall. After the screening and Q and A, Rev. Matsumoto took us to show temple treasure Butsuzo, Shinran Shonin and Gohonzon Amida Nyorai from the Kamakura period. I feel incredibly honored to be in the presence of this incredible Amida Nyorai and it was the greatest pleasure and honor to showcase Carving the Divine there. Again, thank you so much everyone for having me there!
