What happens when the image refuses to stay whole? When history fractures, and the body becomes a site of transformation?
Through fragmentation and collage, these works disrupt inherited images and reassemble them into new narratives.
It’s a metamorphosis.

As part of Surrealism & Visionary Art: A Living Current, painter and scholar Carrie Ann Baade presents Heretic Knowledge: Intuition, Imagination, and the Painted World.
What if imagination were not fantasy but a way of knowing? In this talk, intuition is approached as a form of heretic knowledge, an embodied intelligence historically excluded from rational systems yet persistently alive in artistic practice. Through painting, images do not illustrate ideas; they precede them. Meaning emerges through pigment, gesture, memory, and contemplation, forming understanding before language. Rather than explaining the world, the painted image reorganizes how we experience it.
Drawing from Renaissance and Baroque traditions through a contemporary lens, Baade explores painting as a threshold where desire, mortality, transformation, and shadow coexist. In dialogue with the visionary legacy of Leonora Carrington, the artwork becomes a speculative territory where symbol and perception open radical ways of understanding reality. Here imagination is not escapism, it is orientation.
Participants will reflect on surrealism and visionary experience as methods of inquiry, recognizing painting as a living investigation between inner and outer worlds.
Baade is an internationally exhibiting artist and Professor of Painting and Drawing at Florida State University. Her oil paintings reinterpret historical techniques through contemporary allegory, exploring transformation, sexuality, mortality, and the darker dimensions of human nature. Her work has been shown internationally and published in major art publications.
