About last night: What a roomful of people vibing in community looks like! I can’t say enough good things about — and have made such a sunshiney welcoming place for all ☀️🌱 Thank you for convening and me to talk bodies and muscles and the art (and creativity!) of midlife! It was SO FUN. More brilliant hangs to come in upcoming events with ✨✨✨
So happy to wrap up the official “book tour” for my latest, Why Fly, here in my adopted hometown and with my beloved, at the SF main Library (thank you and!) My tour has taken me to Dallas to Tuscon to New York to Portland among other revered literary cities. Flying in my gyro to a talk with at the Santa Paula airport was a highlight. And there were so many others! Thanks especially to those hardworking writers and aviation enthusiasts who agreed to interview me about this book, of which I am so proud. Here’s looking at you among others. And all hail the wonderful podcasters including and others which my wind blown awe-filled mind can’t remember right now. Going on book tour is a privilege these days so thanks to my team including Nancy Miller and Amanda Dissinger and of course my wonderful longtime agent of who hates flying in passenger planes but believed in this book anyway (and says she feels differently about flight after reading it💜.)
I am really proud to share the launch of this series The Art of Midlife: Don’t Call It a Crisis.

It’s happening at in Oakland and features some of my favorite writers and artists who think so expansively m and generously about bodies and interdependence and beauty and whatever it is we are talking about when we talk about pants.

New fans in the house!!
I’ve been binging Caroline Paul books the past few months and haven’t found one I don’t love. Join us in the Aviatrix Book Club at 1pm Eastern this Sunday to discuss her latest memoir featuring trikes and gyrocopters, which are on my list for 2026!

Listen to my book launch interview with Caroline on the Literary Aviatrix website, YouTube channel, or podcast.

When my friend and talented author said she’d love to interview me about my latest book Why Fly, of course I was going to say yes. Her plan? Hold the talk at the tiny airport in her town of Santa Paula, Ca, where there is an amazing restaurant and event space called The Flying Spoon. Turns out Laurel’s own parents had hangared a plane at Santa Paula Airport during her childhood, in which they’d had a ton of family adventures, and so the place has deep resonance for her. Why don’t I fly my gyrocopter down, she said. An excuse for a flight down California to talk about Why Fly? Why, YES. It took six flying hours with stops at small airports in Half Moon Bay, Watsonville, King City, and Santa Inez before finally landing at beautiful KSZP. Along the way were staggering views of the coast, jagged Mountain ranges to cross, weird snacks to eat at each pit stop and sometimes in the air (turns out cooked veggie burgers sit well in flight suit pockets but air fried oatmeal not so much) and high winds the whole way (one fixed wing pilot landing ahead of me at KHAF asked over the radio if my landing was as frightening for me as his was for him.😊) Thank you Laurel for knowing that this was perfect way to have a book talk. What an adventure.
A book! Taking to the runway and ready to depart February 24, 2026: Hello to WHY FLY: Seeking Awe, Healing, and Our True Selves in the Sky

This is, on the one hand, a very personal book, as I ascend in an experimental gyrocopter to get insight as back on earth my 15 year relationship makes a heart-wrenching descent. WHY FLY also looks at flight from other angles - history, psychology, logistics, physics. Consider it “P is for Plane” instead of “H is for Hawk.”

WHY FLY is written for non-pilots, though you pilots will like it too. Whether you now board a passenger plane terrified, or simply impatient to get to your destination quickly, I hope you will preorder this. I think you will look at flight differently after reading. I hope so. Flight, like love, transformed me. It will for you too.
Preorder from your favorite bookstore (preorders help a book tremendously!) and enjoy the book trailer above. It’s the first one I’ve ever made!

Special Thanks to for launching this book into the sky!

Don’t listen to the naysayers and the frowners and the cautionary-talers; There is so much we can do as we age if we are still privileged enough to have our health. I realize I dabble in a more adrenaline fueled version of outdoor adventure that isn’t to everyone’s taste. But I hope you find this inspirational nevertheless, as a rebuke to everything they say a woman can and should do in her fifties, then go find your own adventure that suits who you are - birdwatching! Long walks! - anything that gets you outside and fills you with awe, exhilaration, and physical vitality. #midlifewomen #womenover50 #womenover40 #adventure #adventurouswomen
