1. If your kids are nursery or school age—start your applications before you’ve even unpacked your suitcase. Dubai schools get booked out fast. I didn’t realise there were waitlists for even nursery spots, and I definitely didn’t know some families apply a year in advance. If you’re moving with kids, research your top schools, reach out early, and get your names down. It’s not just admin, it’s peace of mind.
2. You think you’re just setting up Wi-Fi and a bank account… but suddenly you’re juggling DEWA, Etisalat, Emirates ID, and three app logins just to get your water turned on. There are so many little systems to understand. Getting a SIM card requires your residency. Internet setup can take weeks. You’ll need countless logins for apps like Salik, S’hail, DTC, Carrefour… I wish I had a checklist ready before landing.
3. I had no 5G and depended upon Waze which was the best (and still is) the first time I drove to Mall of the Emirates I legit nearly cried. No one uses indicators. Lanes? Optional.
Driving here is survival-of-the-fittest. You’ll get overtaken in a roundabout, tailgated at 140 km/h, and stuck in endless construction detours. And parking? Good luck. BUT once you adjust, it becomes all good.
