In 1649, Dutchman Peter Thorwöste founded an ironworks on the Fiskars River. He had permission from Queen Christina to do so. They did not use cannons, but everyday objects such as nails, knives and ploughs. From 1832 onwards, Fiskars was the first Finnish art forge to also make scissors and cutlery. These later became world-famous. Copper processing from the 18th century onwards made the town an industrial pioneer. The owner families Julin and Frenckell promoted schools, housing and even Finland's first machine workshop.
