Grenada actually celebrated its 50th anniversary of independence earlier this year (February 7th) from British colonial rule, and each of the national colors carries significant meanings:
* Red: Represents the people's courage, vitality, and desire for freedom.
* Gold: Represents wisdom, the sun, and the friendliness of the people.
* Green: Represents the island's fertile land, vegetation, and agriculture.
Absolutely fabulous! 🇬🇩

That said, here I am last month at Sugar Beach in Saint Lucia. I’m fully clothed in the ocean as ten minutes before this photo there was a massive downpour and I was wet from head to toe. Hmmmm. This photo looks a little “Ursula the Sea Witch” Hopefully, you think me nicer and better looking. HA! 🤭🧜♀️🌊

I am thinking about this after reading some of the articles published earlier this month in connection to my beloved Montserrat celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Many have inaccurate information about the Irish’s connection to Montserrat.
So I am here to say that YES, the Irish were on the island of Montserrat for nearly 300 years, but we are not Irish. The overwhelming majority of Montserratians are the proud descendants of enslaved Africans. Yes, some of us, including myself, have a drop of Irish / British / European DNA, but that is only because the plantation owners took advantage of Black women.
Furthermore, the St Patrick’s Day Festival is suppose to be about commemorating our ancestors who lost their lives after the planned March 17th 1768 rebellion was discovered and put down. It is NOT about celebrating the patron saint of Ireland and engaging in traditional revelry.
The majority of Montserratians are NOT claiming Irish heritage. Our heritage is African Caribbean and we do not have strong ties to Ireland or Irish roots even if some of us have Irish surnames. This is a legacy of slavery and most other connections are superficial. Dr. Howard A. Fergus said as much in his book “Montserrat: History of a Caribbean Colony.”
Note: Pictured here is Titus, a masquerade dancer from Montserrat. His costume along with the dances performed are linked to our African ancestors. There is nothing Irish about them. 🇲🇸

In the second photo I’m with Hugh Riley, Secretary General, Caribbean Tourism Organization and Trevor Sadler, CEO, InterCaribbean Airways. In the third I’m with Hugh Riley and in final picture I’m with Barbara Mercury, Director of Sales UK / Europe, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourist Office.

That said, onwards and upwards. It’s been quite the journey since I launched Caribbean & Co., June 2014 and so its great to get this validation from the esteems group of travel industry judges and the Caribbean Tourism Organization for my efforts promoting travel and tourism to the Caribbean region.
