This one was my husband‘s idea. After all, what gardener wants to leave her creation and hobby behind? I think I would have been perfectly happy to tend that house and the garden forever. It’s been a blissful experience creating a spot in the world that has sparked so much personal joy and fulfillment.
However, I ultimately came around to agreeing that a little window in life has opened for us right now as empty-nesters. Our kids have flown, our parents are still independent and healthy, and our backs haven’t given out yet, so right now feels like a good time for us to have an adventure - just the two of us.
Also, given that we want to spend more time traveling, it’s enticing to think of a life when we can lock the apartment door and jet off somewhere without worrying if the deer have jumped the fence, if the peonies need deadheading, or if the sump pumps are still working. So here we are.
Our new apartment in NYC’s Chelsea district (which has no terrace, unfortunately, but does have a stunning view of the downtown skyline) is just a few blocks away from the NYC flower district, so I plan to be a frequent visitor. And I will create another garden one day when our urban adventure has wrapped up.
While this means I will be leaving Cape Cottage Garden behind starting this weekend, it will always live on in my heart (and in the history of this Instagram account).
