Chuck Frederico, S.J., blessing rings and pins that were distributed to our Class of 2027 and was followed by the presentation of several special honors by President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., Principal Tom Coppola ‘01 and special guests as well as the 2026 induction to Canisius’ Robert Bellarmine Chapter of the National Honor Society.
Among the many awards were these special presentations:
* The Billy Hartigan Scholarship Award, established in memory of the 2008 graduate, was presented to Mark John.
* The Mason Forever Scholarship, established in 2023 by the Monteleone Family in honor of the late Mason Sawyer Monteleone ‘18, was awarded to Gabriel Russell-Webster.
* The Richard J. Cobler Class of 1970 Scholarship was presented to Sawyer Kenerson.
* The Francis B. Jenkins Class of 1939 Scholarship was awarded to Luca Comaratta, Nathan Jank and Andrew Perry.
* The Patrick G. Kwiatkowski ’72 Scholarship was presented to Cole Skowron and Carson Kwiatkowski.
* The Donald P. Pinkel ’44 Endowed Scholarship was presented to Samuel Devlin.

The Crusaders took wins in the Single, Pair, Varsity and Second Varsity Fours, Freshmen Eight, Lightweight Four, Junior Four, Junior Eight, and the Varsity and Second Varsity Eights.
The Junior Eight combination of coxswain Joey Castiglione ’27 and oarsmen Von Kramer ’27, Brodie Vitko ’27, Linden Serbinowski ’27, Elliott Embow ’28, Zachary Bialkowski ’27, Carter Micoli ’28, Collin Harper ’28 and Stas Ryskin ’27 took a five-second, open-water victory over state champion St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.
In an almost all-senior lineup, the Varsity crew of Oliver Reynolds ’26, Patrick Basil ’26, Zack Benczkowski ’26, Joe Cheney ’26, Tommy Snyder ’26, Naz Droyfch ’26, Zachary Bialkowski ’27, Ethan Pirigyi ’26 and coxswain Leo Mertz ’26 eclipsed rival St. Joe’s by 24 seconds.
“If we can blend this level of fun and serious intentionality together in the coming weeks, I think we can reach the next level in our training goals as we contend for top prizes,” said CHS Coach Jacob Filby ’14.
The Crusaders will prepare for their two season-ending national championship regattas, with the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association’s National Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario on June 5-7 followed by the USRowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida on June 11-14.

After our newest graduates proceeded from the standing-room-only Scaccia Auditorium at the close of Thursday’s 156th Commencement Exercises, they walked back through Higgins Hall and departed the school through the front door of the Koessler Academic Center.
They then celebrated with family and friends on the front lawn of 1180 Delaware Ave. taking photos at the Blue Doors and other spots on campus.

After gathering in the hallway of the Beecher Academic Wing, our seniors proceeded into the standing-room-only Scaccia Auditorium for Thursday’s 156th Commencement Exercises.
After the Mr. Canisius speech by Nicholas Scime ’26, the students became graduates by walking across the stage and receiving their diploma. The order of the procession was by the six houses of the CHS House System: Arrupe, Campion, Gonzaga, Jogues, Loyola and Xavier.
As their names were read by Assistant Principal Jeanne Whittington, they were congratulated by Board of Trustees Chair Peter Augustine ’83, President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., and Principal Tom Coppola ’01.
Soon after they were officially declared graduates, they proceeded out of the auditorium, walked back through Higgins Hall and departed the school through the front door of the Koessler Academic Center – where they celebrated with family and friends outside 1180 Delaware Ave.

This past weekend, the Crusaders took on teams from around the state of New York in the ISSA New York State Championship regatta. After hours of competitive racing on Saturday, the Crusaders won a triple tiebreaker with a strong Nardin Academy team.
Canisius 1, the first place boat, was sailed by Charlie Marynowski ‘26 (skipper) and Alex Emblidge ‘29 (crew) in A Fleet, and by Matt Murad ‘26 (skipper) and Will Emblidge ‘27 (crew).
This regatta marks the end of major competition for the Crusaders’ season, and it is safe to say that it was ended on a positive note.

"I went into it with a closed mind, already having decided that I couldn't afford it," said Michael.
Michael loved “everything about” Canisius when Joe was entering his high school years, but didn’t think it was possible financially. Joe attended a different school as a freshman and sophomore. Michael was urged by a friend to see what kind of assistance might be available prior to Joe’s junior year. After a series of interviews, a financial aid package was offered to the Chemans and Joe became a Crusader.
"That is my biggest regret – that I didn't fill out that financial aid paperwork when he was a freshman,” Michael said. “There is help out there, and you never know until you try.
“Of course there will always be some sacrifice, but as a father, it's completely worth it to see your child succeed. And when you really think about it, is it really a sacrifice? Because in the end, we're so much further ahead."
Said Joe: “You're not just a number here. You're part of a family and a brotherhood, and everybody knows each other and looks out for each other."
The Chemans also said they were interested in Canisius because of the outstanding CHS baseball program. On Wednesday at St. Joe’s, Joe entered the game in relief in the bottom of the seventh inning and struck out three straight batters to complete a stirring 3-2 Canisius win.
Michael shared his story with the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, whose Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund offers scholarships to Catholic high schools and grammar schools.
