When Sahand first saw PA ranked as a top job, he had the same reaction a lot of people have: "What even is that?" He actually thought it was a clerical role. But as he explains in this clip, the title is a bit of a misnomer.
PAs are physician extenders. You’re diagnosing, treating illnesses, and prescribing medications. It’s a high-level clinical role where you’re deep in the medicine every day.

POLL QUESTION: What season of your life are you in?
I’ll be honest… I was initially intimidated to attend the round table event. At the time I was in a season of my life that felt heavy. I had intentionally stepped back to create space for myself and my family.
Showing up can feel like a lot, especially when you’re in a season of struggle.
.. But being in a room surrounded by fellow HCPs was exactly what I needed.
We had a “Jeffersonian”-style dinner, a new and beautiful experience for me. It wasn’t a casual networking event, but an evening filled with intentional connection and raw, honest conversations.
I sat alongside peers who are just as passionate about frontline patient care, education, and advocacy as I am, but who also understand the weight this work can carry.
I’m also grateful for opportunities like this to step out of our working silos. Having a safe space to connect reminded me that there is no shame in being human while doing this work.
For this upcoming year, I’m choosing sustainability over ‘pushing through’.

In order to get to the point where I feel comfortable and confident in my skills and ability to see, assess, treat and work with patients with Orthopaedic conditions:
1️⃣ I applied to and received admission into McMaster's PA program (at the time only ~150 people applied in my class, there are now more applicants for 24 spots in the program!)
2️⃣ I completed the Physician Assistant program at McMaster University.
3️⃣ I passed my PA Certification exam, I applied to and secured a PA job offer in Orthopaedic Surgery through HealthForceOntario's PA Career Start Program.
4️⃣ As a working PA, I dedicate time to educate myself around topics in the specialty I work in through continuing medical education and asking questions within the PA/MD collaborative relationship.

✅ 𝐓𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞, 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞: many health care providers do this, but I was really drawn how PAs approach and impact patient care ➡️
✅ 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬. This was an important one to me, exploring different careers in health care I looked at different philosophies and approaches to patient care delivery, and learning/practicing in the medical model was what appealed to me the most.
✅ 𝐏𝐀 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. When looking at the day-to-day work of different professions, I appreciated the ability and scope of what PAs do: seeing and assessing patients, ordering and interpreting investigations, formulating treatment plans, prescribing medications/therapy, patient counselling and education, performing procedures and assisting in surgery. This scope could change depending on the physicians I would work with, the needs of the service, or the specialty I work within.
✅ 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. The ability to switch specialties (switch from family medicine to Emergency Medicine) or work in two specialties at once was a big draw (e.g. 4 days a week in family med, 1 day a week in Emergency Dept). So I could work in a specialty for several years, and I had the option to change if I wanted to/needed to for whatever reasons (changing interests, lifestyle factors/family life, or desire to grow).
✅ 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐀 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. This may be a deterrent for some or a motivating factor to want to pursue PA here in Canada. I liked that I could help pioneer a new profession aimed at reducing health care disparities here in Canada - through my direct work as a clinician, advocacy, research, teaching, leadership and more.
✅ 𝐁𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. Because PAs are newer here, the community of PAs is small, but tight-knit and passionate about patient care!
