I have been giving serious thought to my relationship to the First Nations people on whose land I live and move. As a Canadian settler, the least I thought I could do was acknowledge the traditional stewards of the lands on which I take photographs. But it never seemed like it is enough.

In trying to understand more around the issue, I found an article written by Chelsea Vowel. She is Métis and is a public intellectual, writer, and educator whose work intersects language, gender, Métis self-determination, and resurgence (from her bio). The article is entitled “Beyond Territorial Acknowledgements” (link in my bio). In it she discusses territorial acknowledgment and says that stopping at territorial acknowledgment is unacceptable. She also discusses what it means to be a guest on these lands.

I am going to quote her directly because I want to honour her words and because she challenged me and might give others something to think about.

“What I am saying is that all Indigenous nations have specific expectations of guests, and of hosts, and so far non-Indigenous peoples have not been very good at finding out what those are. I think this needs to be the next step. It requires having actual conversations with Indigenous communities, saying things like “we want to be better guests, how do we do that according to your laws and hey by the way, what ARE your laws” and being prepared to hear the answers, even those that are uncomfortable like “give us the land back”. I mean damn…maybe your huge ass union needs to fork over some of the land its executives have squirreled away on their massive salaries as a gesture of good guesting. That could be a real thing that could happen.” (CONTINUED IN FIRST COMMENT)
