This brooch is based on an artefact which was found in Edinburgh castle, a type of adornment from the late Iron Age/Roman period known as a “Dragonesque Brooch”.

There are many examples of similar brooches from that time period, all having a dragon-like figure. What could be the significance of this symbol?

This heavy piece is based on the 10th century Anglo Saxon trewhiddle style pectoral cross from the Galloway Hoard which was buried in south western Scotland. The original must have been quite a significant piece of jewellery when it was made with very symbolic details.

There are diffrent ways to recreate a historical artefact. While some prefer a restored look, others might want an aged and broken look, as if the piece was just dug up. As an example, for historical re-enactors it makes more sense to have the piece looking brand new.

Many Pictish symbols are shrouded in mystery, no one can say for sure what their significance is. A good example of this is the Z-Rod symbol which appears on many carved standing stones. It is usually carved together with another symbol such as a snake, a double disc, or the strange symbol which you can see in the last photo.

Having had a strong interest in the artistic side of things as far back as we can remember, we met at Nicky’s end of the year art exhibition in college, many years ago. Nicky has always been passionate about historical jewellery which has led him to teaching himself various goldsmithing techniques, both ancient and modern which he is passing on to me, Fausta, on my workshop days. The making of our new Pictish ring which was found in Burghead.✨ I carved the master from jeweller’s wax and had it lost wax cast. Then I finished it off as you can see here. I don’t really film the carving part of the process, is it something you’d like too see?🤔
