But if you’re too chicken (like me!) to get in the ocean at night, there’s still a way to see them!
The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel has a great viewing platform with a light rugged up where the mantas come almost every night. Make reservations for dinner at Manta, or try Hau Tree, the more casual beach restaurant.
Full of colorful galleries, vintage shops, and local eateries, you can easily spend a few hours here.
But if you can time it right, visit on a Friday for Art Night (5PM - 8PM).
The shops stay open late, there’s live music and food vendors…it’s a party!
This stunning beach is famous for its jet-black sand, swaying palms, and the chance to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) lounging along the shore.
Tips for visiting black sand beach:
🗺️ Located on the southern coast of the Big Island…it’s a good spot to pair with a day trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
🐢Turtles often rest on the beach…admire from a safe distance (10 ft+).
🌊Swimming can be rough; check conditions before going in.
🖤Facilities available: restrooms, picnic tables & parking.

The ice is fluffy, the syrups are fresh, and the toppings are so good.
Lines can get long so go early or later in the evening for the shortest wait.
And the portions are pretty big, so they’re definitely shareable.
