With all the stress I’ve had lately wit the breakup/separation processing, buying the flat, solicitors, removal companies and overall drama…I need creative outlets back.
I’m feeling very empty lately, and I know exactly why:
I don’t have time or space to create.
My plan?
This year I’m going to throw myself into the flat refurb and every event of the that I can attend.
This will achieve two things: keep me on my toes creatively and make all my imagination and ideas to flourish again.
Have you ever decoupaged a table in antique chinoiserie paper?
Have you ever covered a lampshade?
Have you ever built a gothic revival bunk bed?
You’re about to learn and get inspired by lots of things on my instagram this year.
Pottery painting was absolutely relaxing, and the beginning of all of this adventure.
The premise at the glaze room is simple: grab a piece of pottery you want to create and your imagination is limitless, all the art materials are provided ( I brought my own stencils and sea sponges as I wanted to do victorian spongeware)
I loved the community spirit of the place and this woking there. I felt in peace for the first time in weeks. Heavenly doesn’t cut it.
One but:
For those of you attending and even if it’s not a requirement: CLEAN AFTER YOURSELVES
I saw a group leaving that had left a horrible mess in their table.
Done with using a colour?
Put it back
Done with a brush?
Clean and return it
And leave that table as clean as possible before you leave.
I’ve worked in service do many years. Those working with the public are NOT slaves, show the people and businesses the same respect we demand for ourselves ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Rant over, but it had to be said
Please visit the studio, it’s in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham and it’s not awfully expensive. My two pieces came up to £75 for bespoke pieces I think it’s a great deal!
Sending you all lots of love!

“Oh Ben, how do you know so much? “
“You’re like a historical encyclopaedia “
“How much research do you do for your projects?”
The answer is pretty simple to me:
I don’t do much research for a particular project other than sourcing, but why?
My brain is a Rolodex of information that I’ve been cultivating since I was a child. And I retain every bit of fact and information in this mind of mine.
In my humble opinion, any designer has to have a very extensive knowledge of the world of history and art.
I distrust people that haven’t read, experienced a museum, visited a gallery, or are interested in the world.
Curiosity might have killed the cat, but it’s also a fundamental pillar of society.
This week, I went to visit MY painting ( yes is totally mine, and I’ve claimed it as such, I already pay enough tax, who’s going to mind? 🤣🤣🤣)
In the confines of the museum there’s inspiration everywhere.
Victorian civil architecture is robust, it sends a message, it’s institutional. Unlike the porridge paste, cookie cutter copy boring architecture we get nowadays. It’s a feast to the eyes.
It’s not just the art I come to see in these environments but the plasterwork, marquetry, masonry, stained glass, patina, ironwork…etc etc
These gems we have in this country such as can kickstart any decorative scheme. You just need to look, discover and be interested.
Inspiration is everywhere if you look. You just need to leave space and scope for imagination to flourish, dream and develop.
The cues for my flat are also pretty robust: you can find gothic revival in churches, asylums, schools…
If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you inadvertently have already been exposed to it.
For the designers out there: consume art, be a patron of these institutions, use research libraries, go to galleries and show reverence to these collections amassed for the masses to enjoy.
All these artefacts are ours to delight and get inspired by. I wish architecture schools would push their students towards these end of research and not the unimaginative sea of glass and steel this world is.
My mortgage advisor was talking to me yesterday about insurances etc…and as the only paper missing was a form from me, now everything can go to the compliance team!
Everyone cross your fingers for me! I could in theory gain possession of the flat a little bit earlier than anticipated which means that I could potentially tile the floor!
My main goal before moving is to have the floor sorted in the living kitchen and the bedroom areas at least, as this will allow me to place all the boxes neatly and start sorting the flat.
The most important thing on moving day is to unpack and fill all the kitchen cupboards with everything and to unpack all my clothes, as this will automatically make a lot of space for me.
If I achieve this, and as a treat: I will allow myself an all night wallpaper session of the living room/ kitchen area!
Are you all ready?
I know I am!

Am I one of the repellent Pevensey children?
No
And neither I like Turkish Delight, that Witch had me at “ how many antiques do you want Ben” and I sold the children automatically.
We hit it on the spot, I understood her struggles as a landowner and businesswoman.
What can I say? Entering through fabulous antique wardrobe, Wearing fur coats, a rendezvous with mr Tumnus, some coffee and b*tching with the witch, a strong independent woman taken away from her realms against her will that is trying to rebuild her life in a fabulous ice palace wearing couture?
It sounds like a fabulous plan to me.
See you in the flat!

Part 1: anchoring pieces.
What’s an anchoring piece I hear you ask?
An anchoring piece is that kind of investment piece of furniture that will govern you the visual language for the overall scheme.
In my case I chose the pieces of comfort: the bed and sofa.
Why?
I wanted to give a classic example of what people consider investment pieces, those that tend to have the highest £££ ticket.
I had it very clear that with my own taste history is a must, and gothic revival is something that I desired.
I created a character if you remember: the disgruntled son of a factory magnate that is rebuilding everything in the ruins of a crumbling mansion, using the factory walls as a shell.
So my principle is to bring that grand decay into grand design.
My bed and sofa already speak the same language: a colour palette of mossy greens, crimson reds, gold and copper metallics, richness, textured wood, ebony, pure white marble…
The juxtaposition of the purity of light with the soothing qualities of darkness.
Stained glass
Velvet
Gold light
Dark Jacobean oak
My piece of advice?
When designing a room listen to your heart and forget fashions. Find the pieces that speak to you, and listen to their design language, follow them suit and you’re ready for step two….coming soon
Have a fabulous Sunday!

He’s a man that loves the little pleasures, the little things. A nice cup of coffee in a bistro, a walk in the rain, a laugh in the sofa with a film, a deep sight eye to eye, a stolen kiss…
And in his wisdom: he introduced me to the pleasure of Papier d’Armènie
As you all know I also love and enjoy all the little pleasures of life. And this is one of those pleasures whose existence that eluded me.
Papier D’Armènie has been around since 1885 in France, and it’s nothing more than concentrated incense aroma soaked into a booklet.
The etiquette to use it goes as follows:
you rip a strip,
then fold it into an accordion fashion,
lit one end,
and
voilá,
once it consumes into dust your whole house gets infused by the aroma of patchouli.
Three strips will cover your aromatisation needs per week.
This booklets come in several fragrances so just choose yours and burn away!
A very chic way to infuse the house with aroma in my opinion. The glamour of fire, the elegance of a match strike, and the delicacy of an accordion fold.
I think that there’s nothing like the feeling of being enthused by scent. It’s really like a hug. A total obsession of mine.
My father was a very well knock sommelier in the Michelin circuit, and it’s from him that I’ve inherited my sharp nose.
Certain smells never leave your memory, almost like a thick fog on a cold December snowy morning.
For instance,
I remember distinctively my grandfathers rough hands smelling of plaster. The scent of dark tobacco in the air.
My grandmothers chimbo carbolic soap while battling stains, and the smell of glass shining ammonia.
Or the smell of my mother’s hair in her pillow after a nap. Warm and soothing.
I knock its strange but all three are core memories for me.
Scent envelops us like a warm memory, a point in time, it allows us to go back and experience our past once again.
There’s nothing like a whiff of a beloved cologne to remember where one was while wearing it.
What are your most treasured memories linked to scent?
Let me know in the comments!

I always ask myself the following:
Will it take me to Narnia?
If the answer is yes, then he decision is clear.
Wish me luck cos this wardrobe is in Telford an I doubt they’ll deliver to Wolverhampton.
But I need this in my life, specifically in my entrance hall.
This Victorian wardrobe has several aesthetic movement fittings that are quite uncommon in uk, and who doesn’t want a walking stick holder?
I might actually use it for the brooms, mop and vacuum, very unglamorous contents I know, but I think Mr Tumnus and Henry the hoover are going to be great friends.
Another piece of history for my 40sq meter mini one bedroom flat!
Ps: if anyone is in the midlands and wants to help move my delicate pieces in a car when I move, I would be very grateful ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Although the unit I’m buying is very tiny, I’ve decided to compartmentalise the space and make it into a gentleman’s gothic revival cabinet of curiosities.
The theme is simple: Victorian, moody, rich and intricate design all based in my beloved gothic revival period.
Think crimson peak and Guillermo Del toros aesthetic. The romance of the decay.
The elements are panneling, mahogany and oak finishes, dark and intricate wallpapers, rich textiles, a lot of brass and stained glass…
Follow the story I’ve got in mind:
A rich industrialists son has lost his fortune, the house burnt down after a workers strike and he’s got nothing left, it’s the early 1900s and he can’t let go of the past and panache and fortune of his family, he purchases a small unit in the slums of Birmingham and re installs as much as he can from the salvaged burnt ruins of his past.
The rich Damasks that once adorned the sumptuous parlours are now just bed drapery, the sculptural gothic revival elements salvaged from the rubble have made up the panelling and the bed…
I want romance, history, theatrical flare and decaying glamour packed into this small living quarters, I want it to be as rich as an antique box of chocolates lined in blue silk.
Isn’t this after all the way Scrooge lived in? Exquisite squalor?
Follow me in the next steps: first I have to secure the property and once that’s done,I shall continue purchasing every bit of Victorian finials, Panneling, corbels and columns I can put my hands on.
I need this bedroom to feel absolutely eccentric and rich.
Two beds ( a bunk of sorts ) and very deep storage underneath with tall cupboards, the second story being accessed through a narrow staircase.
Wish me luck as I’ll be doing more carpentry than Gepetto with this.

beach day tomorrow to rest and enjoy the city before we are off to the farm to do some work.
I’m a little bit worried about my main account as it’s slready been full 24h, and I don’t know what I can do to recover it. If anyone knows anyone in meta let me know. I fear i’ve lost two years of work in a second, 17k followers and all the work opportunities I had lined up.

ben
