Wishing you all good cheer, good health and a safe festive season; thanks so much to everyone who stopped by this year, whether in person or online - we appreciate every visit and we love getting to chat with so many lovely customers! We have a few exciting things coming up in 2026 and while I’m excited to get going, a couple of days with our collective feet up will be very welcome! See you in sunny Devon soon! Love from us all at Butterworths Vintage x
A nice end to the year with this 1920s leather motorcycle jacket. Made by Brodmotor, who manufactured clothing for various sporting pursuits, similar jackets can be seen in this clip from 1929’s Isle of Man TT Race. Its made from very fine goat or kidskin leather and features a wool lining, back belt with a pronged buckle and original silk label. Question is… who wore it better? 🤔 (the dudes at the start is the correct answer!) 😎✌️
Three of our wonderful customers with their fresh finds; thank you so much guys! 😎✌️

Two WW1-era hand embroidered flour sacks that found on a recent buying trip. When shipping blockades during WW1 led to food shortages in France and Belgium, an initiative called the Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB) encouraged school children to embroider printed American and Canadian flour sacks in order to sell to raise funds for food. The finished sacks were largely sold to America and Great Britain, and a collection of examples can be found in the Champaign County Historical Society Museum and in the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, both in the US.
These two sacks were never sent abroad and remained in Belgium, kept safely in a drawer by the family of the girl who stitched them. You can just see the faded red printed lettering on the Roller Mills sack and the colours of the thread are still remarkably vibrant. They aren’t for sale, but you’re welcome to ask to see them if you’re visiting the shop

A linen and horsehide leather military backpack, dated 1915; this 110 year old pack has what appears to be all it’s original fixtures and fittings, including button-in sections and twine inside for securing belongings and various straps on the outside for carrying equipment. At well over 2kg empty, it might not be a daily driver, but it’s still perfectly functional and has plenty of useful life left in it.
Available now! 😎✌️

What it is exactly, I’m not sure… but I kinda love it 😅 Made from seriously thick cotton canvas, with leather straps at the waist and cuffs, protective hood and central snorkel, it’s obviously some sort of protective clothing, but for what, I don’t know! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Available now with full details and more photos 😎✌️

Considering how many of these we get through, I’m not sure I’ve ever actually posted about them 🤔 These beautiful 1930s-40s leather belt pouches were worn four at a time by Swedish soldiers to carry extra ammo and are perfectly suited for carrying all manner of small objects, from small tools, phone and keys, notebook and pens, dog poop bags and more. People buy them for reenactment and LARP events, for hands-free festivals, foraging, gardening and rambling and for gifting to those impossible-to-buy-for people. They’ve been one of our best sellers for ten years, very sturdily made with a belt loop at the back and each has its own unique patina 😎✌️

I completely missed the actual day last week as my concentration has been elsewhere, but I couldn’t let the shop’s 3rd birthday slide by without a mention!
Although has been in the vintage game for over 20 years, I think it’s safe to say that it’s this little shop that has really allowed him to show off what he does best; connecting with people to find some excellent items, creating a space that we hope makes everyone feel welcome (and driving really really long distances 😅)
This year in particular, people have been saying that they’ve made a special trip to see us, which makes us so unbelievably grateful- it might be a well-used saying, but we simply wouldn’t be here without our wonderful customers! 🥹
Special mention of course to employee of the year, Rowlie who we lean on very heavily for his brilliant customer service! ❤️

Mid-1930s Albert Richard two-tone Grizzly jacket. Made in Milwaukee, this jacket made its way to south Devon from the States with its original owner during WW2, and has been tucked away in an attic ever since. The leather has been pricked to give it the look of something more exotic than the horsehide it’s made from, and the contrasting mouton has been sewn with a sun burst-style effect. It’s still in pleasingly robust condition for its age and the Talon zipper runs like the day it was made, having only had a relatively short period of use before being packed away for 70-odd years. We’re thrilled to be its current caretakers! (sorry, nfs right now) 😎✌️
