Days filled with a lot of walking, quiet soul-searching, self-reflection, and calm moments that smelled like the ocean. Exploring without rushing, eating a little more (and a little more out of the ordinary), and letting the island set the pace.
The weather wasn’t always on my side — rainy, cool, windy at times — but apparently perfect for surfers 🌬️🏄♂️ Fun fact: I was told this is considered the worst week to visit, and it only gets better from here, so take notes for your future trip. Homes here don’t even have heating systems because they don’t need them (what a luxury 😅). They say it’s never too hot or too cold — just island balance.
Food markets always excite me, and Mercado Central de Las Palmas did not disappoint 🍌🍊 Papayas, dragon fruits, local produce, and oranges so good they deserve their own paragraph.
Las Canteras beach quickly became a favorite — lively, local, and full of energy. Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and things happening all around. Sadly, I’m injured and couldn’t run, but the long promenade is an absolute runner’s paradise 🏃♀️ next time.
Food overall? So good. How can you not love a place where the signature dish is potatoes 🥔
Papas arrugadas — wrinkly potatoes boiled in salty water, usually served with mojo — simple and perfect. If you’re around Las Canteras, stop by Peña La Vieja, a true ice-cream institution. Try local flavors like cactus fruit or gofio (a flour made from toasted grains, mainly corn).
One of the best decisions was booking a tour through Get Your Guide — such a great way to see the rest of the island if you’re not driving (and yes, it’s a big island). Santa Brígida was one of the stops that really stayed with me — charming, calm, and worth the visit.
And finally, something truly special:
The Sand Nativity of Las Canteras. More than a Christmas installation — it’s an open-air sand museum, an artistic and charitable project that’s put Las Palmas on the world map of winter events. Seeing that level of detail made entirely from sand was unreal 🤍
