The reason(s) I’ve been gone …

It’s been pretty wild! Here’s the story: last summer, my husband and one-year-old son and I moved to Blacksburg, VA so that I could start teaching architecture at Virginia Tech. The day before we moved (literally the day before - the moving van had already taken our stuff and we were staying in a hotel that night) I went to the doctor, who gave us the surprise of a lifetime.

We went through with the move, but had some trouble finding a doctor who would see me in VA. Triplets are high risk, and I was 41. When I did finally see a doctor (around 12 weeks pregnant) he told us one of the babies had a very serious condition that was incompatible with life 90 percent of the time (this was true). If our baby did make it to birth, he would likely have severe, lifelong complications. We were told that since our boys are identical they all likely had the condition and even if they didn’t, the one who did put the other two at risk in utero (this was not quite true). The doctor presented termination as the only medically sensible option. We were devastated. We decided to move back to Dallas for better medical care through the remainder of the pregnancy. The pregnancy was difficult, complicated, and uncomfortable, but I’m happy to tell you that all three boys were born completely healthy at 34 weeks at the end of January. We have since moved to Blacksburg (again!) and I will try my hand at professoring this fall.

I didn’t share any of this before because (1) this is a building science account and this is decidedly off topic, and (2) we were absolutely terrified. I am mentioning it here now only because I really do want to let y’all know where I’ve been and also because online things seem so easy. My husband and I struggled with infertility and loss for years before this. And our present joy is not without past heartache. If any of you are struggling with infertility or are pregnant and scared and want someone to talk to I’d be happy to talk.

As for BSFC, I’m still not ready to come back. But I’ll drop in again from time to time to let you know what the plan is. Until then rock on, friends!
A little break… for the best reason! See you in the fall, friends:)

A special thank-you to subscribers. I’ll be ending the subscription program at the end of the month since I won’t be posting for awhile. You don’t need to do anything! Except accept my sincere gratitude:)
Hello BSFC! Some insulation-related content for the colder weather:) Enjoy!
Hello BSFC! And happy travels if you’re on your way to visit family this weekend.
Hello BSFC! Here’s a nice palate cleanser on terminology after all this talk about vapor:) There were a few terms I didn’t get to this week that I might pick up next week (self-sealing, water shedding, and waterproofing). Let me know if there are others that have tripped you up. And don’t be embarrassed! (You can always drop the classic “asking for a friend” disclaimer in the comments). Lots of very common terms don’t really make a whole lot of sense and/or are super ambiguous (rainscreen and flashing anyone?!) Anyway, let me know.

BSFC is supported by subscribers. (Thank you, friends!) To join this totally rad group of community-minded nerds, click the subscribe button in my profile. It’s not mandatory, of course - the whole idea of BSFC is that it’s public and free - but it *does* take a lot of effort to produce (typically between 10 and 30 hours per post) and I am both grateful for and encouraged by BSFC’s subscribers.
A difficult topic this week! Difficult conceptually, but also difficult in the realization that many common designs put us uncomfortably close to failure — just a *little* more wetting or a *little* less drying and we’ve overly stressed our assembly. And even more worrisome: a lot of times this problem progresses unseen. The house pictured in the title slide is not new.
*
Teaching about vapor is very hard. But it’s still probably not as hard as *learning* about vapor! I very much hope the three last slides help. I hosted an session this week where vapor was the topic and it really became clear to me in a new way how frustratingly elusive a lot of people find the concept of vapor control. We’re going to take a break from the topic for a couple weeks, but I’m determined to work on teaching it in a more helpful way. (Let me know in the comments if you could use some clarity here and if I’m on the right track so far).
*
And speaking of future BSFC posts, if you find these useful, and you think this type of content benefits our profession, please consider becoming a subscriber. It’s no longer really true that this account is non-sponsored: YOU are the sponsors! And I am very grateful:) The button to subscribe is on my profile, under my name and description. While you’re there, you might also consider taking a course from me. (They’re pretty good!) Happy Saturday, BSFC.
The dreaded double vapor barrier! Enjoy, friends, enjoy:)

Speaking of enjoyment, if you do enjoy these posts, and if you enjoy that other people can enjoy them too, would you consider supporting BSFC by becoming a subscriber? There’s a button on my profile to sign up. It’s not mandatory by any means: BSFC will remain open for everyone! But it takes a great deal of effort to put this content together and make it publicly available. If you’ve found it professionally beneficial or if you think this kind of non-sponsored content is beneficial for our industry, I’d be very grateful if you’d subscribe. And to those of you who already have: a heartfelt thank-you for your generosity, community spirit, and super-nerdery!

Hello BSFC! I get asked about continuous - but not exterior - insulation all the time. Here’s an explanation of how these panel products work, why I think they’re so terrific, and what some of the risks are. Enjoy!
*
I’m also happy to announce that BSFC is now supported by subscribers! Think of this as a bit like public radio: if you enjoy BSFC, please consider supporting it. While there will be some subscriber-only content and discussion, I feel very strongly that the account should remain public and accessible. These posts take me between ten and thirty hours to compose. I hope you’ll consider showing that you value the effort, and that you support this type of education for our industry. And to those of you who have already signed up: you are total rockstars! Thank you!
*
I’d also like to thank everyone who participates in this project by commenting on these posts with their own knowledge and experience. People tell me all the time how much the comments and responses help them - it’s not just me who appreciates your insight. Thank you! And, as always, happy Saturday, friends.

Not a regular Saturday BSFC post, just a short video about the more comprehensive, lecture-style courses I offer for architects and builders. All of them are online and on-demand and there’s a link in my bio to each one. So far I offer three (and all qualify for AIA continuing education credit):
*
Building Science for Architects ($750) is the most comprehensive and it runs about 10 hours. My teaching style is similar to what you see here on Instagram and it’s super approachable. The subject matter is challenging, but there are no prerequisites — the idea is to give architects and architects-in-training a framework for understanding building science and construction that they can apply immediately to their daily professional practice. Builders are welcome, too!
*
The Fundamentals of Residential Ventilation for Architects and Builders ($250) is about two hours and it’s the course I’m perhaps most proud of. It breaks down a complicated topic and makes it truly understandable. If you’re serious about indoor air quality (and being able to communicate about IAQ with your clients), this is the course for you.
*
Quit Worrying About Dew Point! ($200) is a short course (about an hour) on vapor control in wall design. It’s a topic that confounds a lot of people… so I made it easier:)
*
Anyway! There’s more detailed information at (link in bio). I’d love it if you took a course from me. In the meantime, I’ll be posting mini-courses here on Instagram and online at ‘s website. Please also check out Acelab’s product library — you’ll dig it!
