We have completed our first rammed earth house and it is the result of 2.5 years of research, testing, and persistence.
The project began during the Covid years. While this is our first rammed earth building, Anjali's journey with the material began during her internship at the Auroville Earth Institute over two decades ago. That early exposure sparked a curiosity that eventually led to this house.
Before designing with rammed earth, we wanted to understand it well enough to trust it with a family's home. We attended workshops, studied earth buildings across Goa, built test walls, tested soils, consulted experts, and worked with a specialised laboratory in Bangalore to develop the right earth mix for the project.
The learning extended beyond the material itself. We trained a team that had never worked with rammed earth, experimented with formwork, and developed ways to seamlessly integrate services, doors, and windows into the walls.
Today, House of Creatives stands built largely from the earth beneath it. The walls require no paint or cladding; the material is the finish.
What has been most rewarding is seeing the house perform. Through Goa's intense monsoons, the walls have weathered heavy rains without erosion. Through increasingly harsh summers, they remain noticeably cool, creating a level of comfort that feels especially relevant in a warming climate.
The architecture is intentionally restrained, allowing rammed earth, terracotta, wood, and stone to take centre stage. More than a completed building, this project represents years of curiosity, experimentation, setbacks, and learning.
This is what we mean by Grounded.
A heartfelt thank you to,
and everyone who shared their knowledge and encouragement along the way.

Rather than mimicking tradition, the design carefully reinterprets Goan elements through proportion, material, and craft. Damaged sections were restored, later additions were removed, and the home was opened to bring in light, air, and a stronger connection to the landscape.
A conscious effort was made to reuse and repurpose materials, from salvaged timber and terracotta tiles to restored doors, old switches, and antique finds. The result is a home that feels familiar yet renewed, rooted in memory while made ready for contemporary living.
Toybox is not just a restoration, but a quiet act of continuation.

The site had a boulder field, a 50-year-old tree, and a hill behind it. We kept all three.
The house wraps around them. Not the other way around.
Red brick laid without plaster. A jali of protruding courses for ventilation and shadow play. Concrete that bows in and out. Large glass panels that frame the Nandi Hills on one side, and a courtyard of retained boulders on the other.
Inside: lime-washed walls, dark stone floors, wood, and light that moves through the house like a slow clock.
This is what we mean by grounded.
A house that began as a question: what if you built around what's already there?
The rock doesn't move. The tree stays. The view frames itself.
Brick, concrete, sky. A porthole that turns a wall into a moment.
A corridor that asks you to slow down.
A stairwell that holds light like a chapel.
This is architecture as restraint,
not adding but listening.
Bricks stacked, concrete holding the memory of its formwork. A vault that hasn't been named yet.
We are somewhere in Bengaluru, the messy site but the idea is not.
This is what architecture looks like before it becomes architecture. Save this and we will show you what it becomes.

We took our time to design and build these walls on site. Not because we were slow, because earth doesn't rush. Layer by layer, white, black + red, deep red, brown, each colour mixed by hand. Each wave poured and manually rammed. When the formwork finally came off, this is what was waiting inside.
This is the extension block of our Aldona Restoration House. A 160-year-old Indo-Portuguese home getting new bones. Built the same way the earth beneath it was made, slowly, in layers, over time.
What's left is something rare: a home where the old and new don't fight. They dance.

Thank you for the honor. We wouldn’t be here without my team and their unwavering support and hard work. We wouldn’t be here without our ‘shaukin’ clients who allow us to experiment and push ourselves with each project.
We are so lucky to be doing something we love. In the end, as always sending love and gratitude to the world.
Thank you, Architectural Digest.

THE POETRY OF TOYBOX
The windows at Toybox were shy little squares, peeking out but never quite stepping forward.
So we had a quiet conversation with the house. Asked it to open up a little.
We didn’t barge in. We coaxed it. Gently.
Now, there are large sliding-folding teak doors that open wide to the verandah. Custom-built to fit the nearly 24-inch-thick walls, because yes, these walls were built before insulation had a name, and somehow still do a better job.
