Wir haben gestern bei seinen Reden laut gelacht, dann wieder ganz gebannt zugehört und im nächsten Moment mussten wir die Taschentücher rausholen. Und die politische Botschaft dahinter war ein klarer Weckruf für alle Zuhörenden.

Ich hab mich dieses Jahr sehr über die Neuerscheinung eines meiner absoluten Lieblingsautoren gefreut.
Ian McEwan: Was wir wissen können. Übersetzt von Bernhard Robben.
In dem Zukunftsszenario, das im Jahr 2119 spielt, ist die Welt überschwemmt, Europa eine Insellandschaft und der Wohlstand unserer Gegenwart ein ferner Traum. Der Literaturwissenschaftler Thomas Metcalfe sucht ein verschollenes Gedicht von Weltrang.
Die Handlung war fesselnd erzählt und trifft den Zeitgeist einer Generation, der zweite Teil hat dem Buches noch eine überraschende Wende gegeben, die dem Titel gerecht wird. Typisch für seinen Schreibstil war die Sprache präzise und komplex. Besonders einfühlsam beschreibt McEwan neben dem großen Thema noch Liebe und Krankheit im Alter.
Das Buch lässt einen über unseren Lebensstandard reflektieren und stellt die dringliche Frage, warum wir aktuell so wenig gegen den Klimawandel tun. Es gibt viele Denkanstöße darüber, wie wir als Gesellschaft jetzt leben und zukünftig leben wollen.
