A monolith of raw concrete, stripped of ornament and reduced to intent. This mixed-use project housing a jewellery store doesn’t reveal itself easily—it withholds, compresses, then unfolds in fragments of light and shadow. From the street, it reads as a mute block, almost defensive. Step inside, and the architecture begins to breathe.
Narrow thresholds give way to vertical drama, where stair treads float like poured slabs of gravity. Above, apertures slice the sky into precise geometries, pulling daylight deep into the core. Shadows stretch and shift across surfaces, turning walls into instruments of time.
There’s a quiet tension here—between weight and void, exposure and refuge. Even the most utilitarian moments, a basin or a landing, feel composed within a larger spatial choreography.
This is concrete at its most deliberate: not just material, but atmosphere. Not just shelter, but sequence.

Concrete curves steal the scene at Phoenix Apartments in Okinawa. A pair of external spiral staircases wrap around cylindrical cores, their undersides washed in a faded coral red that glows against the island’s harsh light. The rest is more familiar: roughcast concrete, compulsory breeze block screens, and the slow staining of salt air and humidity.
Likely built in the 1970s or 80s, this is not a celebrated work of architecture, but something quieter—an everyday apartment block with unexpected flair.
There’s no named architect here, just the imprint of a local builder working within the realities of climate and cost, yet still finding room for expression. The result sits somewhere between function and theatre, where circulation becomes sculpture.
Okinawa is full of buildings like this—anonymous, weathered, and inventive—shaped as much by typhoons and time as by design. Sometimes the most compelling architecture isn’t the most famous, but the one you almost miss when looking for the something else.

"Darth Vader’s holiday home? Nah. This striking complex features affordable housing stacked above a ground-floor elderly day care centre. It models Okinawa’s social aspect of planning, more characterized elsewhere by the interests of private developers.
The “reverse inequality theory”, foundational to Nago City’s 1973 “Comprehensive Plan/Basic Concept”, challenges development strategies focused solely on income growth. It underscores the significance of community-centred urban planning. In Okinawa, where communal ties and collective wellbeing are highly valued, such approaches are essential. The region emphasizes sustainable development that respects local cultures and environments, promoting a balance between economic growth and community wellbeing. This planning philosophy seeks to create urban spaces that nurture community bonds and ensure equitable access to resources.
That said, a friend of mine had the opportunity to move into one of the apartments but his wife declined, arguing it wasn’t close enough to a convenience store. Definitely grounds for divorce."
Thanks to and for their superb sketches and for his incredible illustrations.

Look forward to +220 images of over 100 intriguing Brutalist buildings across Japan. Extensive insight accompanies photography of this misunderstood, though increasingly appreciated, style of architecture.
Believe it or not, demolition of this iconic building is being considered.
