Meet Kelsey Birkeland, BSF Freestyle Devo Assistant Coach. Kelsey is an inspiration to the youth of our Freestyle Devo Program. She is always on time and excited to spend her day with her group. She communicates well with athletes and parents, and she serves as a leader when coaching our athletes. We love to see Kelsey out there practicing the same skills our kids are working on: dialing in her 360 and so on.
Meet Lukas Bergston, U15 Head Freeride Coach. Lukas is a leader on and off the ski hill. He always has a smile on his face and a positive attitude, not to mention he is always putting the kids first. Lukas brings an incredible depth of knowledge in the sport of freeride, and it really shows. A valued co-worker by his fellow coaches, BSF is grateful for his contributions this season.

1.How long have you been skiing with BSF?
I have been skiing with BSF for 5 or 6 seasons. For the first few seasons, I participated in the Nordic intro program and learned a lot. The past two seasons, I have been on the skimo team and have had so much fun with it.
2.What plans do you have for next year?
I plan to attend the University of Montana for music.
3.Favorite BSF moment?
It is hard for me to pick a favorite moment because I have truly enjoyed every bit of my time with BSF skimo. One of the times that stands out to me is when I traveled to Teton Pass near Choteau for a race with my whole team this year. There was tons of snowfall right before our race, and they ended up having to cancel the race (for avalanche danger) right when my teammates and I got almost to the top of the bootpack. It was a little scary but overall such a gnarly and epic experience, and I'm glad I got to do it with my friends. Another of my favorite times has got to be when the whole skimo team did a ski day at Bridger Bowl and hiked the ridge together. It was so fun to see a new-to-me area of the mountain and also so rewarding to help some of the younger skiers on their first ridge hike.
4.Do you have any words of wisdom you would like to share with the younger skiers in your program?
I would say 1) Be grateful to your coaches because they are so amazing and do so much for you, and 2) just enjoy your time on the snow (or rocks sometimes) with your friends! Competition can be a lot of fun but at the end of the day, we live in an amazing place and recognizing and appreciating the beauty of this area can really keep you on good terms with the sport.

A long list of season accomplishments paved the way for these awards, but we also want to say that BSF's model of creating an accessible ski culture, focusing on mental health, team building, and keeping kids engaged creates a powerful community that motivates our young skiers to show up with a true love of sport. That model grows great skiers and great people. Coaches like Mike and Andrew have spent years creating this culture, mentoring each skier on an individual level, and believing that when BSF is a place where kids can belong, great things happen both on and off the snow. A huge shoutout to all our staff & athletes & volunteers for making this community-focused club one of the best in the country!
