A new vision…

This pieces whispers the echoes of an era not forgotten, drawing inspiration from the vivid travel advertisements of the 1930s to the 1960s. It captures the essence of the Green Book, a beacon for Black travelers who ventured forth with courage, their journeys etched in stories of resistance. Here, the car stands as a steadfast symbol of liberation, a vessel navigating the open road, where freedom dances hand in hand with danger.

The canvas, peeled away, breathes life into the scene, crafting a three-dimensional tapestry of space and time. In the vast embrace of the desert, the soul is invited to reflect on its own individualism, to ponder the weight of existence amidst the infinite horizon.

At the heart of this narrative lies a vintage Exxon gas station, once known as Esso, a sanctuary for Black travelers. Exxon’s legacy of support for Black mobility, distributing the Green Book within its walls, weaves a thread of unity and resilience into the fabric of this artwork, celebrating the spirit of those who dared to journey forth.

Google is celebrating Route 66 of its 100th anniversary with an interactive map of the historic 2,400-mile-long stretch of highway with popular locations travelers once explored.

What wasn’t advertised was Route 66 being the most dangerous route for minorities to travel on. For Black travelers during the Jim Crow era, the journey along Route 66 could be life-threatening. Of the 89 counties along the route, 44 contained "sundown towns." This meant that over 1,500 of the 2,400 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles ran through hostile or segregated territory.

A serendipitous moment to meet, Aldis Hodge who played in the movie One Night In Miami. A movie based off of The Historic Hampton House and how fitting my latest series is centered around that historic space itself based off of the Green Book.

Shout out for handling his craft so well. This is a good dude
“BROWN VS Board of Education” -a collaborative work of Art from and

In 1947, photographer Gordon Parks documented the groundbreaking “doll tests” conducted by psychologists Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark for Ebony magazine. The experiments, which showed that Black children in segregated schools often preferred white dolls and assigned them positive traits, provided crucial evidence for the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision, which ruled school segregation unconstitutional.

This piece of Art, which combines signature oil painting style on the right side, and signature style of incorporating dolls and children’s toys inside canvas on the Left side, brings a new meaning of what these photographs should represent, when young Black and Brown children are instilled with self love and confidence.

From the 1930s through the 1960s, The Negro Motorist Green Book offered African Americans a vital network of hotels, restaurants, and businesses that welcomed Black travelers and other marginalized groups, providing safe passage through a segregated America.

This piece reflects the realities of travel for African Americans in mid-century America and how The Green Book annual guide became both an indispensable tool for the nation's growing Black middle class and a testament to a thriving, self-sustaining business community.

Through deliberate material choices and layered compositions, this piece uncovers the hidden narratives embedded within the framework of American history, stories often omitted from the dominant record.

This piece is constructed on the reverse side of the canvas, a symbolic gesture urging viewers to look beyond the surface and confront what is unseen. Taut strings connect nodes across the piece, evoking the memory of movement from one destination to another. A cemented white paste, embedded with miniature figures, alludes to the enduring foundation of the Underground Railroad, its echoes visible within the Green Book's legacy. Finally, the screen mesh enveloping the work invites viewers to peer through the veil of history and witness the lived experiences of Black travelers navigating a divided nation.
