Tourist time in Japan after the Pool World Championships was a bit of a challenge! My hip wasn’t having a bar of anything much so I hobbled around in a lot of pain. Where we could we borrowed wheelchairs to rest it. A night up Mt Koyasan to bring us back down the earth was peaceful and grounding. The world expo in Osaka feasted the eyes with architecture and spoke to the heart with messages of how badly we are destroying the planet. Huge thanks to my travel buddy for wheeling me around for two days and putting up with my slow limping pace when on my feet! One bonus of being in a wheelchair was priority queues and also the lovely ladies at the UAE hall let us in after they had closed and gave us a quick private tour! It’s definitely a challenge getting around in a chair and it opened my eyes to what wheelchair users experience on a daily basis which is frustrating to put it mildly. I now have a diagnosis of bursitis and gluteal tendinopathy for what’s going on in my hip and have had a cortisone injection to hopefully help settle things down. Thankfully the hip is happy in the water so pool training can plod along while I’m injured. Japan you remain one of my favourite countries 🤓🥰The AIDA WCH in Japan was a mixed bag. Returning to competing after 3 years, my nerves are back with vengeance 😂 With burnout, illnesses last year & my neurodivergence I also struggle to be around lots of people. It’s a challenging conundrum - I love to travel, catch up with & support everyone but my nervous system really struggles. I could tell on official training that my nervous system was over activated so spent time trying to down regulate. DYNB I felt ok before the dive but as soon as my head went underwater things went pear shaped 😂 Before I even knew fight flight had taken over & my head was out of the water before 50m. Needless to say I was disappointed & cried that day. Two rest days followed. I felt grateful my coach was available to coach my STA dive. I set myself a low goal of 3mins. The dive was hard & I was going for the wall early. Lucky I found a connection to Jarrod’s voice, focused on that & tried my best to fight. I remember hearing him say you’re over 2:30 & my brain thought - this isn’t going well! I came up when I felt I needed thinking it was around 3mins. During my SP I was a little hypoxic & thought I said ok before giving the ok signal. I was convinced I had red carded. my judge looked very seriously at me and said “Liza how many mistakes do you think you made?” One I replied. Then he smiled, said none & showed me a white card. Turning the stopwatch around it said 4:19! I couldn’t believe it one second more than my recent training! Unfortunately my hip had started hurting severely in Japan but I was determined to at least get in for DYN. The dive was tough but I managed to talk myself through the tricky part. I broke my own rule about walls & came up at 150m. It was more than I had done since returning to training in fact since 2018! 😁 It was an honour to be on the Aussie team 🇦🇺 Huge thanks to for being the best coach, my training buddies especially who showed up week after week & my travel buddy thanks for pushing me around in a wheelchair for our last days in Japan 🤗 Post comp I’m on new drugs to help my neurodivergence and hip 🤞🏻😝Art on Naoshima 🫶Tadao Ando is one of my architectural loves, it was inspiring to be immersed in his work while on Naoshima Island. The island was the site of a refinery for decades and the natural environment was destroyed. Soichiro Fukutake was inspired in the late 80s to revitalise the islands to cultural art islands and bring back the natural environment. Ando has been involved with many projects on the islands over the last 25 years. It’s been an awfully long time since I posted on socials. 2024 was, to be frank, a complete shit show and the hardest year I’ve faced since my incomplete spinal cord injury. I won’t go into the details but after all life threw my way, I wasn’t functioning, my mental health was in a really bad way and I was experiencing what I now know to be Autistic Burnout. I received my Autism and ADHD diagnosis earlier this year and am still figuring it all out but it does make a LOT of my challenges in life make way more sense now. While I haven’t had the desire to post in a very long time I’m finally feeling like my old self and am ready to stick my head out here again. Just wanted this first post to acknowledge my struggles as I think we should normalise sharing the ups and downs when we have the capacity to. Returning to the water has played a huge part in me finding myself again and it feels really good to be enjoying pool time again 🥰Happy 2024! 🥳 Today marks one week of me being in hospital with severe pneumonia that developed from HMPV (human metapneumovirus) 🦠 - I’d never even heard of it before. I developed a cough on the 4th but felt ok until I went to bed last Sunday then everything went pear shaped over night. When the ambulance came to my house my O2 was 80% and fever was 40.5, I was struggling to walk, talk and breathe. It’s been a bit of a scary time! Going to the bathroom was like doing a gym workout for most of the week! 😂 Thankfully I’ve improved a bit from there but I’m still dependent on O2 and not medically stable enough to go home yet. I’ve got a great medical team and know I’m in the best place for now. Definitely starting the year off with a bang! 🤪🤒😷Excited to be organising the AFA Depth Nationals 2023 in Camotes, Philippines. It’s a WR Status Competition and open to athletes of all nationalities. I hope to see freediving friends from around the world there. There are still places available register 🥳😎Happy 2nd birthday Henry! You big doofus I love you more than I can describe 🥰 It blows my mind when I remember your a different species as we have the most amazing connection. Thanks for all the snuggles, company and chats. You’re definitely a heart dog 💚So far Jeju has been amazing. So great to catch up with friends from all over and the food is so good! So grateful for the opportunities this sport gives me. Today we had the opening ceremony for the World Championship and we were privileged with a performance from the Jeju Haenyeo! 🥰
