It traces the Labour Party’s transformation into a censorial, authoritarian machine, and sounds the alarm about the possible corruption of British politics by dark money.

We are delighted to be partnering with Coexist Community Kitchen for another event, following the success of our launch for At Home with Alva Gotby last year. For this one, author of Leftovers, Eleanor Barnett, will be joining us for a discussion about the history of food preservation and food waste in Britain from the sixteenth-century kitchen to the present day, and a three course meal prepared using food that would otherwise go to waste.

Diary of an Ending - Lina Scheynius
Scheynius guides us through her odyssey of heartbreak in her collection of diaries. Using her photographic lens, we intrude on the most intimate of details in Scheynius late relationship. This is the sacred text of heartache, an elegy to lovers lost with a hopeful use of form and photographs. I cannot recommend this enough - the love child of a memoir, a gallery exhibition and essays!
Slanting Towards the Sea - Lidija Hilje
A gorgeous novel - don't be intimidated by the size! A love letter to Croatia which poses the question of if you love something, is it best to let it go? Slanting Towards the Sea centres around a divorced couple, Ivona and Vlaho, and Ivona's role in his new life - guardian to his children and close friends with his new wife. However, when Ivona begins dating again, the dynamic is disrupted. Meditations on loyalty, death, guilt, love, and loss are intricately explored in this stunning cinematic story.
Down the Drain - Julia Fox
Easily the most entertaining book I've read this year. Even if you haven't heard of Julia Fox, you will be absolutely hooked on her tell-all memoir. The terms fashion icon, problematic artist, and recovering addict do not even begin to describe Fox and her whirlwind of a life. She approaches her trauma with such tact and care, awarding her past self grace whilst also holding herself to the highest standards. I could not put this down.
Hunchback - Saou Ichikawa
I don't know if I've ever read a book like it! Ichikawa offers a provocative presentation of class, sex, and disability, with her witty narrative style and playful form. She encourages you to try and see the world as she does. Odd, funny, endearing and totally honest - Hunchback is an unforgettable story in under 100 pages!
Elastic - Johanne Bille
A short, scandinavian novel about women, love, and perpetual discomfort. Billes use of language is absolutely superb, and enthralled me like nothing else. The inclusion of similes in Elastic should be envied by all, alongside the deep dive into monogamy, desire, and responsibility.
On the Calculation of Volume 1 – Solvej Balle
Joe has also included Volume 1-3 of Solvej Balle’s On the Calculation of Volume in his top reads of the year (see previous posts) and rightly so. I don’t have a whole lot more to add other than these books instantly became some of the best books I have ever read. The way that love, the passing of time, and the concept of the self is studied in this volume is simply staggering. I haven’t stopped thinking about them and I cannot wait for the next 4 to come out.
The Wax Child – Olga Ravn
The Wax Child is a beautifully written and hauntingly bleak Danish tale of witchcraft set in the 17th century from the perspective of a rather unexpected narrator by the incredible Olga Ravn. It is everything I love in a story – unsettling, strange, addictive.
The Edges – Angelo Tjissens
This was one of the first books I read in 2025 and I knew it would make it to my list of favourite books of the year. If you enjoy reading short but poignant novels, the kind that leave you feeling like you’ve just been ripped apart with emotion and heart ache, then yeah I’d say this is for you. It is just so stunning. I love it so much.
Stay With Me – Hanne Orstavik
Hanne Orstavik is a brilliant writer that I cannot get enough of and Stay With Me is my favourite of hers so far. This year, I also read (and highly recommend) The Blue Room and Ti Amo by her as well. They compliment each other perfectly as they all explore similar themes of grief, love, complex relationships, illness, and trauma with incredible clarity. Orstavik’s writing is just exquisite. What a genius.
Mr Outside – Caleb Klaces
In short, Mr Outside is a deeply emotional and reflective account of a son packing up his father’s house before moving him to a care home. Through his exceptional writing, which is accompanied by a few stark photos throughout the book, Klaces explores dementia, childhood, grief, connection, and isolation. While I found it to be a very quiet and melancholic read, Klaces still manages to cut through this with moments of humour and normality.

Bookhaus is one of the few bookshops where A.C.T., can be bought. (My choice).
