Simple pleasures: tacking.

I love tacking! When I’m going to do some hand stitching, I pin the pieces together and then carefully tack everything in position. With the pins gone, I don’t feel like I’m wrestling a crown-of-thorns starfish, and everything stays flat and in place. Yes it takes more time, but the stitching is so much more enjoyable. Yes I could use glue, but I don’t like pushing my needles through a layer of glue.
The weird bit is, I’ve come to love tacking as an activity in itself. I look forward to it. It’s kind of a slow crafting ritual now.
So I’m wondering, are there any other tacking enthusiasts out there?

Well that’s just about a wrap on 2025. Thank you to everyone who has liked, commented and shared over the past year. Despite the horrors of algorithms, advertising etc I still really enjoy connecting with you on this platform. I hope there has been something in my work that has inspired, encouraged or uplifted you, because you’ve certainly given that to me.

To the new followers - this is what I look like on my back deck (moments after a new haircut!). And if you’re wondering about my business name, here is a little explanation:
“Bonsai Woman” started out as a cheeky reference to my height. As a 5ft tall woman my interest in textiles began with the need to make clothes for myself that actually fit. Now Bonsai Woman has become a metaphor for how I work with fibre. Carefully considered, thoughtfully designed, slowly growing. Connected to the past, but focused on shaping the future. Creating a microcosm so we can examine a bigger world.
Squeezing in some cotton carding on the back deck before it gets too hot. These long, thin rolls of prepared fibre are called punis. They are perfect for spinning on my Akha spindle.

No music today - just backyard sounds. Birds, cicadas, and a neighbour’s kid throwing a tantrum.

Decades down the track and I’m still passionate about working with natural, undyed fibres.

This scarf is being woven with 100% undyed Australian cotton.

The green and white weft yarns were spun by hand on spindles from undyed fibre. The warp was made by from undyed Australian Super Cotton.
