Join us at on Tuesday, 30 June 2026 at 12:25h, where Roger Boltshauser will present RESPIRA, our urban mining concept, as part of the broader theme “Reinventing Stone: Ecological Continuities and Tectonic Innovations” with.

The RESPIRA concept & architecture will be on view from 19. June to 19. July 2026 in the central exhibition of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona. The concept tackles the concrete issue in the most direct way. It acknowledges the necessity of concrete as an unavoidable material but shifts its sourcing from the earth’s crust to the built environment itself in a radically circular approach.

The RESPIRA project is a collaborative initiative developed by Boltshauser Architects, the Urban Mining Institute (NL), and (CH).
It’s made possible by and the Dureco Group.

We are excited to see you in Barcelona!

Bauliche Entwicklung Psychiatrische Universitätsklinik Zürich Lengg
Studienauftrag: 1. Preis

Architectural Development of the University Hospital of Psychiatry Zurich Lengg
Invited Study Commission: 1st prize

The listed historic complex of the University Hospital of Psychiatry Zurich at the Lengg campus is being expanded with new buildings designed to meet a future-oriented psychiatry.

The spatial and functional connection between the existing and new buildings is created through a landscaped plateau incorporating shared spaces such as a restaurant, lounge areas, and a library. The new wards for adult and geriatric psychiatry, with their generous inner courtyards, connect openly and directly to the plateau in keeping with the concept of open psychiatry, while their positioning ensures a scale appropriate to the surrounding neighbourhood. On the opposite side of the street, a new child and adolescent psychiatry building is being developed together with a hospital school located within the rooftop garden.

The concept of “Healing Architecture”, with its close relationship to nature, informs every aspect of the design, from the choice of materials and room design to light, colour, and acoustics.

With the final building permit granted by the City of Zurich, construction work has begun on the first phase of the “Altwiesen-/Dübendorfstrasse” residential development in Zurich-Schwamendingen. The project continues the historic garden city concept of A.H. Steiner in a contemporary and sustainable way, creating a multiple of new housing units within an already developed urban area.
Angled and staggered linear buildings reinterpret the typologies of the garden city. The skeletal structural system has been refined to a minimum through the use of slender slabs and beams. Reused masonry, timber façade elements, and clay blocks in the interior fit-out underline the project’s consistent approach to sustainable construction. Open access galleries combine circulation and private outdoor spaces while simultaneously reducing the heated building volume.

We would like to thank everyone involved for their dedicated collaboration.

Restaurant Iddaburg, Ersatzneubau

Restaurant Iddaburg, Replacement Building

The St. Iddaburg pilgrimage church is gaining additional regional and supra-regional appeal with the new restaurant building. The previous structure is making way for a restaurant that meets modern requirements for a well-functioning catering business, while still incorporating all the uses of the former building. The defining design element of the new structure is a wide, cantilevered, and inviting wooden roof that spreads out like a wing and appears to rest lightly on the building's structure. The dining area opens up completely on three sides, while a closed rear volume contains the living space and kitchen. In line with these two distinct spatial concepts, the building is primarily defined by two local materials: spruce wood for the roof and facade, and rammed lime concrete—reminiscent of the region's characteristic Nagelfluh stone—for the solid components.

Konzeptstudie Mehrfamilienhaus Uster

Concept Study Apartment Building Uster

The 'Wohnwerkstatt' (living-workshop), developed by Boltshauser Architekten and LEHMAG, combines innovative rammed earth construction technologies—rammed on-site as well as (hybrid-)prefabricated—with high spatial quality to create resource-efficient and social living space. The project is designed as solar-oriented architecture: low-tech building systems specifically leverage solar energy to create synergies with the thermal mass of the earth components. In this process, natural air circulation plays a central role, accounting for about half of the overall concept. Material choice and construction thus become an integral part, significantly enhancing both ecological efficiency and quality of use.
