Returning again and again with the promise of another season, the orange trees insist that not everything has been lost. Like memory itself.

In the UK, after completing, I hung this one in my sister’s garden in the middle of winter, imagining the gardens I grew up in and thinking about the strange ways memory survives.

In Adana, the orange tree is never just a tree. It carries seasons, family histories, and the weight of things passed from one hand to another.

Outside, the world remains fractured by borders, wars, and old tensions that refuse to disappear.

All the while, Everything Is Romantic by Charli XCX played on repeat.

I’m really excited to share that my new body of work is currently on display at the Royal Gardens in Venice. Commissioned by Swatch, the works are part of the group exhibition Flora Fantastica, presented during the Venice Biennale.

Bringing together five artists who participated in residency programs throughout 2024 and 2025, the exhibition explores botanical visions shaped through creation and exchange in Shanghai.

My heartfelt thanks to Carlo Giordanetti, Chiara Arceci, and Diana Casciano for organising the exhibition and for all their support throughout the event.

Presenting by Nan Ke Gallery & Paloma Arts Foundation

Nan Ke Gallery is pleased to announce that Paloma Arts Foundation will present artist Mustafa Boğa at Photofairs Shanghai 2026, in the “Voices of Difference” section. As an artist long represented and supported by Nan Ke Gallery, Boğa’s presentation also marks an extension of the gallery’s curatorial trajectory.

Mustafa Boğa’s practice is grounded in a sustained engagement with the complexities of the contemporary world. He employs art as a medium to interrogate the entanglements of the world, humanity, and conflict, and how these forces continuously shape the fabric of life. This sensitivity to tension is rooted in his upbringing in southern Turkey, positioning his work in constant negotiation between personal experience and broader historical narratives.

A smokestack releases a dark cloud of smoke into an otherwise serene horizon. Each scene in Mustafa Boğa ‘s work bears the imprint of human action, yet people are conspicuously absent.

This sense of incompletion is intensified by the material form of the works. Rather than painted surfaces, Mustafa Boğa’s works are embroidered translations of photographic sources. Such translation is never neutral: in shifting from photograph to thread, something is inevitably altered or lost. Threads soften contours and slow down legibility. Displacing the documentary authority of the photograph, they turn what might have been evidence into something closer to recollection. They offer a remade moment, reconstructed through labour. Like memory itself, the image becomes fragmentary, certain details sharpen while others fade.
