In ‘Beigeification™’ architect, educator and occasional writer Edgar Rodriguez critically examines the beige takeover of our contemporary aesthetics. In recent years, much of Western fashion, design and architecture has donned shades of beige to the point where the “not-a-color” seems stiflingly overrepresented. On the surface, this may seem inconsequential; trends and preferences change with the times and while some may find beige drab and depressing, others consider it soothing and elegant. But in this illustrated essay, Rodriguez argues that the growing dominance of beige signifies a homogenization that hamstrings free creative expression:

“The apparent pseudo-neutrality of our physical and virtual realities, embodied in the prevalence of monochromatic expressions, in fact may signal an aversion to difference, risk, and experimentation, reflecting a broader conservatism of taste and thought in today’s culture.”

To support this reasoning, Rodriguez touches upon the political and financial upheaval of the past years but also refers to the writings of Flaubert or the printshop origins of the words ‘cliché’ and ‘stereotype’.

In another nod to print culture, ‘Beigeification™’ cleverly subverts printing tradition by ending with several pages “intentionally left beige”, thus taking a final dig at the blankness of beige.

‘Beigeification™’ is available online and in-store for €16.-

A multilingual dawn chorus that fits in the palm of your hand!

Recently, we’ve received a restock of titles from Edition Taube and among the latest titles is this little book by Elfi Seidel, ‘What Birds Say’. The work explores onomatopoeic bird sounds in 64 different languages, compiled from conversations with native speakers. These approximations of the language of birds appear on the pages in concrete-poem-like arrangements, allowing readers to fully appreciate their melodies. The variety of sounds and renderings shows the linguistic diversity of both humans and birds in a playful, lyrical way.

‘What Birds Say’ is available online and in-store for €14.-

We are never short on (Easter) bunnies in Boekie Woekie! They are simply everywhere (thanks to our Queen of Rabbits, Hettie!), not just in the store but also in the living quarters of Geldersekade 39. This overabundance of rabbits led a good friend of ours to write an observation on the wall of our restroom (a work of art in itself where for many years guests have been leaving funny drawings and scatological poems in various languages). You can see what our friend wrote in the final slide.

Happy Easter, everyone!

A double feature today of Steve Wheatley’s ‘P.T. Exercises’ (1981) and ‘The Egyptian Postures’ (2017), edited by Ian Whittlesea. Both explore exercise in art and though they are separated by some decades and differ in scope and approach, we thought it interesting to examine these books side by side.

‘P.T. Exercises’ offers tongue-tied wallflowers a program of poses to stretch their vocabularies and increase their “social effectiveness”. 28 poses are offered, one per day, each with a word beginning with a ‘p’ and ending with a ‘t’ (a wink to Physical Training). The work presents itself as a spoof on the hawkish ads that prey on people’s insecurities by offering bogus solutions to imagined or exaggerated problems. But while the tone of ‘P.T. Exercises’ is playful, the work does invite us to reflect on similarities between physical and linguistic actions.

‘The Egyptian Postures’, meanwhile, delves into the world of Mazdaznan and its role in Bauhaus. Mazdaznan was an esoteric belief system borrowing from various beliefs and practices and styled as the heir to Zoroastrianism. Its founder Dr. Otoman Zar-Adusht Ha’nish (real name Otto Hanisch), a figure of mystery and controverse, proposed a holistic view of mind and body and set out a series of postures to achieve enlightenment. These postures were then taught by Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus School to aid in creative expression.

The book features Ha’nish’s original text on the postures as well as photographs and Whittlesea’s drawings of Ery Nzaramba holding the postures. Pádraic E. Moore critically reflects on Mazdaznan and its connection to Bauhaus in an essay in which he placed Mazdaznan in a wider context of esotericism and its pedagogical role in 20th century art.

Though often orientalist or appropriative in form, Mazdaznan’s adoption of beliefs and practices from the East could be seen as a response to a separation of mind and body in Western thought, while a similar duality is used to comedic effect by Wheatley.

‘P.T. Exercises’ and ‘The Egyptian Postures’ are available online or in-store for €25.- and €30.-

Boekie Woekie is proud to present no. 42 of our series ‘Het Andre Behr Pamflet’: ‘Boekie Woekie Has Moved But It Is Still in Amsterdam’ by Russell Weekes!

Russell spent 2 days here at the shop printing the single-sheet pamphlets on our old Brother printer and then meticulously cutting and folding each sheet. Russell takes as his subject the recent relocation of Boekie Woekie and casts the significance of this move in the ambiguous symbol of the arrow/tulip:

“Boekie Woekie has moved to its third location in Amsterdam. This Andre Behr Pamflet celebrates the move through the misreading of an arrow symbol as a tulip.

Growing as we open the single folded sheet, the tulip points us towards Boekie Woekie’s current location at Geldersekade 39.”

A number of vinyl black stickers left by Weekes on the steps of one of the stairs further illustrates this idea while also pointing visitors down into the lower level of the store.

‘Het Andre Behr Pamflet’ no. 42 is available online or in-store for €11.-
