When we neglect our spine from moving in one way, is when we either overload it in one plane of motion or need to borrow strength from other planes of motion (compensation).
Mobility should be efficient and progressive. Meaning if you have access to range challenge that range through more advanced movements and more load/ range.
You don’t need to spend hours on mobility routines to progress. Equally not all strength based movements should only be focused on load. You can use lighter load to help obtain comfort in deeper positions, such as a squat or Jefferson curl. This will help build greater mobility foundations whilst strengthen your weaker positions.

Our hips are our biggest asset when it comes to mobility and athletic performance.
Strong hips aren’t just about power - they’re about control, access to range and ability to distribute your centre of mass relative to the plane of motion you’re working in.
ZERCHER POSITION 🏋🏽♂️: This position demands a high degree of trunk engagement. A large reason why people who get hurt doing compound movements (who have the mobility prerequisites) is due to their trunk and hips not communicating and moving simultaneously or overextending with the spine.
Thus promoting mobiltly and positional awarensss 🏆
LAST SLIDE • STABILITY EXERCISES FOR STRONG SHAPES
Stability creates opportunity. When your body learns how to hold strong and organised shapes your athletic potential will automatically increase.
When it comes to stability and athletic performance I like to focus on creating strong shapes in the movement as this will provide a lot of feedback on weak points, where stability may be leaking etc.
Athleticism isn’t always about brute force, it’s about CONTROL.

Improving your overhead position requires a combination of access to range, strength and stability.
Loading overhead positions is about distributing your weight and resilience at end range which demands a level of body awareness on top of your standard mobility check points.
SLIDE 1️⃣: Advanced
You can keep your knees on the box to regress the position and alternatively not bring your chest through your arms.
SLIDE 2️⃣: Beginner / Intermediate
This is a regression of slide 1 however useful for all levels as a primer or warm up exercise.
SLIDE 3️⃣: Beginner / Intermediate
This exercise requires a certain level of awareness and strength at end range to get the full benefits as you do not want to be overloading your traps to achieve the overhead position.
Utilising unilateral work is a low hanging fruit that provides so much return in both the short and long term journey.

1️⃣ - Targets: Adductors
A great regression of Cossack squat, exposing some lateral motion, opens up the hips with a relatively controlled environment in a kneeling position. Holding the KB out in front also helps offset the position to keep your rib cage and hips in a cooperative position.
2️⃣ - Targets Hamstrings & Stability
This exercises is a great way of exposing the hamstring to apply force in a lengthened position which will aid mobility gains. It will also teach your hamstring to decelerate/ “catch” a position which is particularly important in strength training and power development.
3️⃣ Targets Hips & Stability
Hurdle based exercises are always a staple within my mobility routines. You can use many props to execute this (a bar, a plyo box). Hurdle variations are great for
- Dynamic Hip Range & motion
- Active mobility / Compression Strength
- Pelvic Control & Hip Stability
- Better Gait & Athletic Mechanics

Some movements are slightly advanced and require certain prerequisites so any questions please feel free to reach out.
Utilising active, passive and loaded forms of mobility 🏋🏽♂️
#mobility #mobilitywork #mobilitytraining #shouldermobility #thoracicmobility
Why loaded mobility 🤷🏻♂️
Loaded mobility exercises bridge the gap between traditional mobility routines and real-world movement efficiency by adding external load to mobility drills. This small change transforms mobility from something passive and isolated into something integrated, strength-based, and transferable.
Here’s HOW:
🎯 Turns flexibitly in to usable strength
🎯 Teaches the body to stabilise under load
🎯 Creates more efficient motor patterns
🎯 Increases tissue capacity
Striving to do more advanced mobility exercises is important due to the fact that you not only want a progressive framework with any form of movement but part of something being sustainable is being able to do something EFFCIENTLY.

Trail running is a different beast, literally hard to explain or do justice to the difficulty. Huge respect for everyone who competes in these.
Going into this:
- Never run longer than 15km
- Never done any trail running and hardly any hiking
- 6 weeks prep whilst still trying to maintain strength and size
- Alex in the same boat + injuring his knee pretty bad
Saying all of this is not to flex or boast but to highlight if you back yourself and have the right attitude ANYTHING is possible. You can’t put a ceiling on limits if they haven’t been set and despite not having the best background for this I was determined to set my limits HIGH.
Because if you don’t aim too high you aim too low.
Time to get some strength back and then onto the next 👀

Topics covered in the session 💭
- How to monitor his injury and rehab during his travels/ offseason
- Accessing range passively, actively and loaded
- How to distribute your centre of mass and use ground force to be efficient with mechanics and also recruit other areas of your body to support the intentions of the respective movement
- Coiling your body and expressing force through your hips first and then transferring that through your limbs
- Breathing and bracing

🏋🏽♂️ Improves strength and mobility simultaneously. Some positions require a certain level mobility. If you don’t have the respective mobility for a movement then it doesn’t matter how strong you are 🤷🏻♂️ honest work at all times.
At the same time it also promotes strength and muscular endurance due to the demands of certain movements.
🏋🏽♂️ You learn how to shift your body mass throughout a movement which is paramount when it comes to compound movements/ athletic performance. Meaning there is a high rate of transfer across other training modalities and increased performance within a sport (particularly combat).
🏋🏽♂️Promotes a growth mindset as it rewards consistency due to the fact it genuinely takes time to be able to do the “skills” BUT you’re genuinely proud because of the amount of work and effort you put in to get to that goal 👏🏽
🏋🏽♂️ Minimal equipment is required. This can be a benefit so you aren’t relying too much equipment at the gym OR if you’re like myself and travel a lot, it can be difficult to even find a decent gym. Having a baseline level of calisthenics helps keep a positive momentum with your training regardless of where you’re at 🥳
