There are real bits of fossil in this. The teeth are real, but they're in the wrong locations and from four different species! Part of the jaw was real, part of it was plaster. Frankenfossil π Super wonky π±
I want to make it clear that there is a difference between a chimera fossil like this, and a fossil that has been professionally restored.
Restoration specialists absolutely have my heart. Their talents contribute so much to the field of paleontology. π¦΄
Personally, I won't purchase vertebrate fossils, and largely/vocally oppose their sale when it is in detriment to science.
Quick facts!:
Mosasaurs are perhaps the most frequently faked fossils out there. Teeth from these Cretaceous beasts are a dime a dozen in the phosphate mines of Morocco, and sold in bulk.

I'm so fortunate to spread the word about their fundraising efforts, ending at 10 pm TONIGHT!
The Texas Vertebrate Paleontology Collections are the foundation for hundreds of published studies on global paleontology and Texas geology, contributing significantly to our knowledge of evolution, ecology, and the prehistory of North America. This facility preserves nearly 150 years of scholarly research!
My love of paleontology was fostered by studies from UT, with some of my earliest memories being walking the dinosaur tracks in Austin and Bandera. π«Άπ¦΄

As always, I had to take a picture with Tricera-purse the moment I saw a Triceratops skull at π¦΄

My Grandparents Were Dinosaurs is my new favorite paleontology children's book! Anne and Steve have created such a fun verse that will not only entertain children, but reward even the most dinosaur obsessed kiddo with new facts!
You can truly tell that Anne was an elementary teacher because this book reflects the fun energy needed to engage children! This book is great for adults as well as the end includes more in-depth science about the evolution of birds and dinosaurs.
You'll be able to connect with your kiddo more when they ask the "why dinosaurs" questions that come after reading any paleo book!
I can see this book being a great addition for science lessons for lower elementary. As a former teacher myself, I know I would have included it!
Packed with beautiful illustrations, the scientific know-how of one of the world's top paleontologists, and the passion of a childhood educator, My Grandparents Were Dinosaurs is sure to be a hit! The little ones in my life better be ready to receive this book as holiday and birthday presents this year!
Thank you to and for sending me a digital copy of this book! π
More to come for a review, but know that this is a 6 star read for me! ββββββ PALEONTOLOGIST APPROVED π¦β¨
Why should you trust me and preorder this book if you like to read romance?
1) I'm a paleontologist and can verify this book is a wonderful representation
2) I own a T. rex skull replica and that's pretty neat
3)The plot was inspired by The Bone Wars!!! π¦΄
4) Ripley Adams & James Smithson are the cutest π¦π¦
Maggie put so much thought and research into this book. Fossil Feud does not read as a gimmick at all. In fact, the opening scene of the book is almost exactly something that happened to me my first year as a museum field paleontologist that I burst out laughing!
Thank you again Maggie and Dell for giving me this opportunity!

Getting to large museums, or museums at all, can be a task. Outreach events allow the science to come to you! Outreach can also happen within the museum itself by hosting events, that encourage folks who would not have come in by themselves to join in something specific that sparked their interest! π¦π¦βοΈ
For many growing up in older generations, museum trips were something stagnant. There wasn't much interaction, just a bunch of staring.
Outreach not only inspires the next generation, but can reintegrate those from older generations into a love of science with a new sense of accessibility!!!π«
Anyways, here are some of my favorite snapshots of a handful of my favorite museum educators π«Ά
(I have so many more pictures of others, but they for some reason are very blurry π)

I do remind kiddos all the time that the asteroid hit the Earth setting off a chain of events that were this extinction. π
The K-Pg wasn't an instant thing! It is often framed growing up in school as if the impact vaporized all of the dinosaurs right then and there, no more dinos... Nope! The asteroid was the catalyst βοΈ

A friend caught this series of expressions in real time, and I think they're hilarious ππ«Άπ
Museum collections visits are beginning soon so the mysteries of this sturdy little friend can be revealed.
As of now, this is Snailissa (named for my mom lol) π

Parasaurolophus, meaning βnear crested lizardβ, was a Late Cretaceous Hadrosaur famous for its distinctive skull. There are several theories as to the purpose of the crest, and it probably severed several of them! The generally accepted use was in communication and calls, but other theories include visual identification and temperature regulation!
